Catherine Kamau

EARLY LIFE

Catherine Njoki Kamau was born on 3 February 1987 in Nyahururu, Kenya, as the firstborn in her family. She attended Chogoria High School, where she actively participated in the drama club, before completing her secondary education at Loreto Convent Msongari in Nairobi. There she won the Miss Loreto (or Miss Msongari) pageant award. She pursued a Diploma in Communications (Public Relations major) at what is now Multimedia University of Kenya. She also briefly studied accountancy at KCA University and enrolled at Makerere University in Uganda. At age 19, shortly after starting university in Uganda, she became pregnant with her first child, Leon, and returned home to raise him as a young single mother. She has spoken openly about the challenges of teenage pregnancy and later launched advocacy work under the “Queens Must Wait” campaign encouraging young women to delay motherhood.

CAREER

Kamau entered the industry around 2006–2008 after a cousin (already on the cast of Mother-in-Law) informed her of an opening for a dancer/receptionist on the Citizen TV drama. She quickly progressed to the major role of Celina/Selina (Charlie’s wife and Olive’s stepmother), becoming one of the show’s most popular characters for several years. She later starred as Sue in the Swahili-language series Sue Na Jonnie (2017–2019), winning the Kalasha Award for Best Actress in a TV Drama (2017) and receiving further nominations. Brand ambassadorships include long-term roles with Harpic Kenya, Nice & Lovely (L’Oréal/Interconsumer Products), and Sta Soft. In 2022 she launched the lipcare/beauty brand House of Humba. In May 2024 she was part of President William Ruto’s entourage during a U.S. state visit as a representative of Kenya’s creative industry. In December 2024 she received the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) Presidential Award for her contributions to the film industry. In 2025 she was appointed Global Goodwill Ambassador for a Bill Gates & Friends social movement (tied to the philanthropist’s 70th birthday campaign), representing African voices with a focus on Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria. The same year she launched the Auntie Kate Foundation, which focuses on girl-child welfare, menstrual health, community nutrition, fighting FGM, and women’s empowerment. She has also been recognised as Brand Influencer of the Year (Africa Best of the Year 2025 by Ranks Africa).

PERSONAL LIFE

Kamau married film director and producer Philip Karanja (known from Tahidi High and Phil-It Productions) on 17 November 2017. The couple welcomed daughter Karla Njeri in December 2019. Philip also embraced her son Leon. In September 2023 they publicly announced the end of their marriage after more than five years, stating they had reached the decision privately earlier and would continue as friends, co-parents, and business partners. She is a mother of two and frequently shares aspects of parenting, fashion, lifestyle, and personal growth on her digital platforms. She remains close to her family and has described herself as coming from a supportive, close-knit background.

Kamau is widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most recognisable and versatile actresses, with a career spanning television, film (including Netflix titles), digital content, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. She continues to balance acting, brand partnerships, content creation, and philanthropic work while remaining an influential voice on motherhood, women’s issues, and the creative industry.
