Biography
EARLY LIFE
Alfred Munyua discovered his talent for performance in primary school. Teachers noticed his ability to recite poems, deliver votes of thanks at school functions, and excel in compositions and insha (essays). He continued participating in drama through high school and college. He studied Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nairobi, graduating in 2009. After high school he briefly engaged in business before fully committing to the creative industry.
CAREER
Munyua rose to national recognition for his role as Swapo, a staff member, on the long-running Citizen TV drama Mother-in-Law. He remained with the show for roughly a decade before leaving because he felt the role was no longer challenging and he wanted to grow as Alfred Munyua rather than be defined solely by the character. After leaving, he experienced a period of about a year without steady work before securing new projects. He has worked extensively in both Kenyan and international productions. Notable credits include The First Grader (2010, as Teacher Alfred), Sense8 (Netflix, 2017, as Irungu), Poacher (2018, as Saitoti), Nafsi (2021, as Sebastian), Crime and Justice (Showmax, 2021–2022, as Detective Silas), Baba Yao (as Joe), La Msingi (as Jeremy), Nganya, Wakamba Forever, Hit and Run, Makutano Junction, and various short films including Home, God Forbid, Pwagu, Kisima, Love Sweet Sound, and Kileo (2024) He has also worked as a director, writer, producer, and in casting. He is the CEO of Machagascar Films/Studios and is associated with the upcoming project Ngone Mwaitu (2026), for which he is listed as director and story contributor. In interviews he has spoken candidly about challenges in the Kenyan film industry, including issues of greed, delayed payments, lack of incentives, and the need for better collective management and government support. He emphasises giving his best to every project, whether local or international.
PERSONAL LIFE
Munyua keeps his personal and family life relatively private. In interviews he has spoken about the importance of balancing work on film and television sets with home life, describing the set as his “office” and home as his safe, private space. Fans long associated him with the character Swapo, to the point that many continued calling him by the character name years after he left the show.
Munyua is regarded as a versatile and professional screen actor who successfully transitioned from a long-running soap role into more diverse film and series work, including international titles. He continues to act, direct, produce, and advocate for better conditions in Kenya’s creative sector. He maintains an active presence promoting his work and projects.
