Kunle Afolayan

EARLY LIFE

Kunle Afolayan was born on 30 September 1975 in Ebute Metta, Lagos, into a prominent theatre and film family. He is of Igbomina-Yoruba descent from Kwara State. His father, Adeyemi Josiah Afolayan (popularly known as Ade Love), was a renowned theatre practitioner, actor, and filmmaker. His mother, Adeola, also worked in theatre. He has siblings active in the industry: actors Gabriel Afolayan, Aremu Afolayan, and Moji Afolayan, and film composer Anu Afolayan. He attended Nigerian Model Primary School and Federal Government College in Lagos. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Lagos and later worked in banking (corporate affairs) while taking occasional acting roles. In 2005 he obtained a diploma in digital filmmaking from the New York Film Academy and transitioned fully into film.

CAREER

Afolayan began as an actor, notably in Tunde Kelani’s Saworoide (1999) and Agogo Eewo (2002). Encouraged by Kelani, he gained on-screen experience before moving behind the camera. He founded Golden Effects Pictures in 2005. His directorial debut, Irapada (2006), a supernatural thriller, won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Film in an African Language and is regarded as an early marker of “New Nigerian Cinema”—higher-budget, cinema-oriented films with stronger production values. Breakthrough came with The Figurine (Araromire, 2009/2010), a critical and commercial success that earned multiple Africa Movie Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and solidified his reputation for ambitious storytelling blending folklore, thriller, and social themes. He has invested significantly in infrastructure such as the KAP Film Village and Resort. Afolayan is recognized for larger budgets, 35mm/cinema releases, improved technical standards, and stories rooted in Nigerian culture, history, and spirituality that travel internationally.

PERSONAL LIFE

Afolayan married Tolu Afolayan in 2007; the couple divorced in 2019. They have four children (including Diekoloreoluwa David, Darimisire, Eyiyemi—who appeared in Aníkúlápó—and Darasimi Bibiire Afolayan in various reports). He identifies as a freethinker. He maintains a relatively private personal life while remaining active in industry and cultural discussions.

Kunle Afolayan is one of the most influential figures in contemporary Nollywood, bridging traditional Yoruba storytelling with modern cinematic craft and global streaming platforms. He has faced occasional public controversies (including a 2015 piracy-related tweet for which he apologized) but remains a central voice on industry economics, distribution, and quality. His work continues to shape both Nigerian cinema and its international perception.
