John Njaga Demps

EARLY LIFE

John Njaga Demps originally aspired to become a news cameraman. He pursued a degree in broadcast journalism at Florida A&M University. During his senior year, a pivotal internship at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles changed his path. He enrolled in AFI’s Cinematography Program (one of the few Black students in his class around 1982) and graduated having learned the art of visual storytelling with the camera. Mentorship and encouragement during this period solidified his commitment to cinematography.

CAREER

After graduating from AFI, Demps began his career in music videos, collaborating with major artists including Tupac, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Akon, and Queen Latifah. He has directed photography on over 70 world-class music videos. He also worked on Hollywood and independent features, television movies, documentaries, and commercials, traveling for projects in Western and Southern Africa, Iceland, Japan, and beyond. He is experienced across formats including Arri Alexa, RED, HD, Super 35mm, Super 16mm, and still photography. His transition to Nollywood began around 2005 through a chance meeting with Nigerian filmmaker Steve Gukas on a set in Namibia. He has since become one of the most sought-after Directors of Photography in the industry, elevating the visual quality of several high-profile productions. Notable Nollywood and African credits as Cinematographer / DOP include Wives on Strike (2016), Living in Bondage: Breaking Free (2019), Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020), Nneka the Pretty Serpent (2020), Crossroads (2020), Chief Daddy 2: Going for Broke (2022), The Trade (2023), House of Ga’a (2024, Netflix / BAP Productions), Everybody Loves Jenifa (2024), Finding Me (2025), Nine (2023). Earlier Hollywood/independent work includes The Annihilation of Fish (1999, starring James Earl Jones, Lynn Redgrave, and Margot Kidder; directed by Charles Burnett), contributions to Menace II Society (1993), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), and other projects. He has also worked on MTV Shuga, short films, and international documentaries. He runs or is associated with Demps Pro Films (based in Dakar).

PERSONAL LIFE

Demps keeps his personal life private. He currently resides in Dakar, Senegal, from where he continues international work. He has expressed strong advocacy for authentic African storytelling and hopes to see more Nigerian and African films recognized at major festivals such as Cannes.

John Njaga Demps is regarded as a bridge between Hollywood technical excellence and African storytelling. Festival award-winning and with decades of experience, he is known for raising production values and visual sophistication in Nollywood. He continues to advocate for original African narratives on the global stage.
