Uju's War

In Uju's War, Benjamin and Uju enjoy a quiet kitchen moment until his mother, Mama Benjamin, arrives unannounced with luggage. Uju voices concern about boundaries, but Benjamin welcomes her warmly. Mama Benjamin immediately claims the kitchen, cooking meals and rearranging the household while Uju struggles to hold her place as wife. She demands prior notice for visits, a request Mama Benjamin dismisses as unnecessary in her son's house. Friction erupts when Mama Benjamin refuses to respect Uju's kitchen autonomy, leading to heated confrontations where both women claim authority. Uju, advised by her own mother to fight for her marriage, begins resisting aggressively, discarding Mama Benjamin's food and replacing her prized nonstick pots with aluminum ones. The rivalry spills into a public scene at a family wedding over the front passenger seat. Benjamin attempts mediation but finally orders his mother to leave after she threatens to destroy his marriage. Mama Benjamin departs, and Uju celebrates what she believes is victory. The dynamic shifts when Uju discovers she is pregnant and suffers debilitating morning sickness. With Uju's mother unable to leave her business in Aba, Benjamin reluctantly informs Mama Benjamin, who returns immediately to provide devoted care. She nurses Uju through the first trimester with herbal teas, massages, and constant attention, fostering an unexpected bond. When Uju's mother visits and warns her against Mama Benjamin's supposed manipulation, Uju defends her mother-in-law's kindness and reveals she had sent her own mother away. Overhearing this, Mama Benjamin prepares to leave again to preserve peace, but Uju intercepts her, leading to a tearful reconciliation where both women acknowledge their faults. Mama Benjamin admits her possessiveness, and Uju admits her defensiveness rooted in her parents' broken marriage.
