Tug of War is a visually lush, atmospheric coming-of-age political drama that breaks down the rigid class divides and racial segregation systems enforced by the British colonial regime. The plot takes the audience deep into the historic, labyrinthine alleyways of Stone Town, where Yasmin finds temporary refuge within the local Swahili community. Along with a generous local musician named Mwajuma, Yasmin learns to see her homeland with new eyes.

Storyline

Set in the tense, final years of 1950s British colonial Zanzibar, Tug of War (Vuta N'Kuvute) tracks a complex, forbidden romance backdropped by a burgeoning political revolution. Denge, a passionate and frustrated young Swahili freedom fighter, spends his nights distributing anti-colonial pamphlets and recruiting people to the underground independence movement. His path collides with Yasmin, a privileged young Indian-Zanzibari woman who has just run away from an oppressive, arranged marriage. As they fall in love, their romantic longing becomes mirrors for their individual and collective fights for freedom.
