Gabo Zigamba

EARLY LIFE

Salim Ahmedy Issa was born on 6 June 1983 in Muheza, Tanga Region, Tanzania. He has described family roots that include Digo and Hehe heritage, with his maternal grandfather connected to the well-known Kiyeyeu family of Iringa. He began primary education around 1992–1998 at Iringa Wilolesi Primary School, attended secondary school at Al-Haramain, and later studied at Darul Ulumi (2003–2006). In 2006 he enrolled at the Bagamoyo College of Arts (TASUBA) for a one-year arts course. Before fully entering the film industry he worked briefly (around 2007) at Super Loaf as an accountant and later in product mixing.

CAREER

Gabo Zigamba began acting around 2006–2008 while still connected to TASUBA and early theatre groups in Dar es Salaam. Early film appearances included Olopong, 007 Days, The Plan, and The Killers. He gained wider recognition with roles in Bado Natafuta (2012/2013), Danija (2012/2014), Big Surprise (2014), Jicho Langu, Siri Ya Giningi, and especially Safari Ya Gwalu (2015), for which he won Best Actor awards. He has appeared in numerous Bongo movies and television series, including Kona, Siyabonga (which he also directed), Heaven Sent, Sumu, Segere, Kesho, Kigoma, and the internationally screened Tug of War / Vuta N’Kuvute (2021, directed by Amil Shivji), in which he played Koplo Matata. Television credits include Bondeni (producer and presenter), Kapuni, Baba Olivia, Jua Kali (as Diba), Family Love, and Maskani. As a producer and director he founded Gabz Media Production (T) Limited / Sarafu Media and has created or produced several of his own projects. More recent work includes the series Mawio and the 2025 YouTube-released drama series Baraluko, which he produced and directed, focusing on everyday Tanzanian family and relationship issues. He has received multiple awards, notably Best Male Actor at the Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) in 2015/2016, 2017 and 2018, as well as EATV awards and recognition at other regional festivals for films such as Safari Ya Gwalu and Bado Natafuta.

PERSONAL LIFE

He is married to Latifa Babla Ivan since 2020 and is a father of four children. He has spoken about using his platform for social messages and positivity. In addition to acting and filmmaking he has ventured into fashion, previously promoting snapback caps.

Gabo Zigamba is regarded as one of the established and versatile figures in Tanzanian (Bongo) film and television, known for strong character performances across drama, comedy, and socially themed stories. He continues to act, direct, and produce while expanding distribution through his own YouTube channel and advocating for greater international reach for Tanzanian content.
