The Promise

Mezie, a university graduate working as a construction laborer, reluctantly gives his parents money after an argument, promising to end their suffering. This promise, from which the film takes its title The Promise, is shattered when he receives a call for a final interview at an oil company and is struck by a car while running home joyfully. He is left critically injured, and his mother refuses to accept his condition, insisting he is only resting. When the hospital tells his father that Chimezie was dead, his mother refuses to accept it, saying he was just resting and refusing to admit him to a mortuary. Chimezie's mother keeps his dead body in the house and when his father gave her an anti-decaying cream, she rejects it saying her son wasn't dead. Meanwhile, a wealthy man named Akumezie begins to ingratiate himself with the family, buying them a house and providing financial support. Chisom, Mezie's sister, grows suspicious of Akumezie's motives, especially when he warns her to stay away from her brother. Akumezie later reveals that his kindness is a calculated plan to control Chisom. The family, now dependent on Akumezie, struggles with the mystery surrounding his intentions. One night, the parents share a vivid dream in which Mezie's spirit explains that he has borrowed the body of a man in a coma (Akumezie) to fulfill his promises to them. He says his time is up and he must return to the spirit world. Upon waking, the parents find a physical note left by Mezie's spirit, confirming the dream's truth. They realize that Mezie has been protecting them from beyond. The father finds comfort in the revelation that his son is at peace. Chisom reconciles with a man who had previously upset her, embracing him after he apologizes. The family accepts Mezie's spiritual protection and moves forward, grateful for the promise that was fulfilled.
