Chasing Forever

In Chasing Forever Anita Jumoke Adebayo arrives in Nigeria after deportation and a drug spiral that began with her father's pressure to become a doctor. Her car fails in a parking lot and Emmanuel, a NYSC corps member living with his mother in the staff quarters, offers a jump start only to receive a sharp refusal. At the house Chief Adebayo tells her she has disgraced the family name while Aigbe, the longtime cook, watches Anita shake through withdrawal. Emmanuel crosses her path again and this time he stays, listening to her emptiness and urging her to fight, and a quiet trust grows between them. Then Anita learns she is pregnant. Chief erupts, calling Emmanuel a nobody and a servant's son, and he orders an abortion before evicting Emmanuel and his mother from the quarters and freezing Anita's accounts to break her resolve. Emmanuel weighs the bribe Chief offers to walk away but chooses the child, promising to provide through labor. Days later Chief collapses with kidney failure and tests show Emmanuel is a perfect match. Despite arrest and public humiliation Emmanuel agrees to donate, not for Chief but for the unborn baby and the principle that evil does not answer evil. The surgery succeeds and in the recovery room Chief confronts his pride, admitting he worshipped vanity and nearly destroyed what mattered. He begs Emmanuel's forgiveness, acknowledging the young man taught him the power of love over status. The family gathers as Chief embraces his daughter and meets his granddaughter, expressing gratitude to Emmanuel, Anita, and Emmanuel's mother. They share laughter and tears and plan a vacation together.
