Before Thirty

Before Thirty follows Enitan, a daughter her mother calls a curse. The mother feeds only Ayomide, her golden girl. Enitan is sent out of an exam for unpaid fees. Her mother says she has money for only one child. Enitan still sleeps on the floor and cooks for the family. A market woman confronts the mother. The mother dismisses her. Enitan hears about a house-help job in Lagos. She leaves. In Lagos, she works for Jerry, a businessman with a proposal. Her quiet feedback helps him. His contract is approved. Jerry makes Enitan his direct assistant. He promises to pay for her education. Ayomide gives her savings to a man who promises travel abroad. The man disappears. Ayomide moves to the city. Enitan sees her sister near Jerry's estate. She asks Jerry to let Ayomide stay. Ayomide settles in. She sets her sights on Jerry. Jerry cannot find his gold wristwatch. Ayomide accuses Enitan of stealing it. Jerry believes her. Enitan leaves rather than be called a thief. Jerry overhears Ayomide's phone confession. Jerry has her arrested. He finds Enitan in the middle of a job search. He brings her home. Enitan's mother storms Jerry's estate. She screams that Enitan caused Ayomide's imprisonment. Enitan kneels. She begs Jerry to release her sister. He agrees. Jerry asks why her mother treats her so cruelly. Enitan explains the priestess's prophecy: she is a curse who will die before thirty. Her father died on a bushmeat errand for her tenth birthday. Jerry tells her to ignore the priestess and hold onto faith. He takes her out for two weeks so she can start living. They confide in each other. They kiss. A car accident puts Enitan in a coma. Jerry wakes in the hospital. He is told she is gone. He prays over her. Her finger moves. Doctors rush her to the ICU. She comes back. Enitan and Jerry go to her mother's house. The mother is shocked to see Enitan alive. She begs forgiveness. She blames the priestess. Enitan forgives her.
