A Life For A Life

Francis arrives at his office already disoriented from drink, a condition that costs him his job on the spot and sends him stumbling into a confrontation with his boss. His landlady then pounces over unpaid rent, and the ensuing violent quarrel lands him in police custody; once released, he finds his possessions tossed outside and his car seized as collateral. Forced to shelter with his friend Rodney and Rodney’s wife Lola, Francis meets Ene, a widow whose daughter Chineme is often sick and who lives in a small, neglected house nearby. Though Ene initially treats him with suspicion and sharp words, Francis offers to fix her broken car, and the shared project slowly builds an uneasy friendship. Over days of working on the car, Ene confides that her husband was killed by a hit-and-run driver who left him to die on the roadside. Francis is horrified to realize, through a wallet he had kept, that he was that driver; the truth sits like a stone in his chest, and yet he continues caring for Ene and Chineme with growing devotion. During a dinner hosted by Rodney and Lola, Ene wanders into Francis’s room and discovers the wallet, recognizing her late husband’s belongings, and she confronts him in front of everyone. Francis confesses, then phones the police to turn himself in, and the shock of his arrest ripples through the house; while he sits in custody, Chineme is diagnosed with kidney failure, prompting Francis to offer one of his kidneys in an act of repayment. During the transplant surgery, the girl’s operation succeeds, but Francis dies from complications, leaving Ene crushed by the loss of a man who both destroyed her family and saved her daughter. Months afterward, a heartfelt letter from Francis reaches Ene, apologizing and expressing hope for her healing; she reads it with tears, then forgives him out of gratitude for her child’s life.
