Steve Tientcheu

EARLY LIFE

Steve Tientcheu was born on 20 July 1982 in Villepinte, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department of the Paris region. He grew up in the Cité des 3000 housing project in nearby Aulnay-sous-Bois. Of Cameroonian parentage, he has spoken of a family of four children and strongly identifies with his banlieue roots, once describing himself as “Français de papier, but my real passport is the 93” (the department number for Seine-Saint-Denis). Before acting he worked various jobs, including as a security guard (vigile) in a medical practice. He discovered formal theatre training relatively late, enrolling at the prestigious Cours Simon drama school in Paris at the age of 25 after learning of its existence. His early experiences there were transformative. Filmmaker Alice Diop, who knew him from the neighborhood, followed him for about two and a half years during this period and made the documentary La Mort de Danton (2011) about his journey into acting.

CAREER

Tientcheu began appearing on screen around 2010–2011, first in short films and television (including episodes of the Canal+ series Braquo). He gradually built a reputation through supporting roles in films such as Rengaine (2010/2012), Qui vive (2014), Les Combattants (2014), Toute première fois (2015), Ni le ciel ni la terre (2015), Braqueurs (The Crew, 2015), Réparer les vivants (2016), Roulez jeunesse (2018), and Une intime conviction (2019). His major breakthrough came in 2019 with Ladj Ly’s critically acclaimed Les Misérables, in which he played “Le Maire,” a feared local figure of authority in a Paris banlieue. The performance was widely praised for its authenticity and presence; the film won multiple César Awards, including Best Film. He has since collaborated again with Ly (including Bâtiment 5 / Les Indésirables). Other notable credits include the war film Qu’un sang impur… (as Sergent-chef Senghor), La Nuit des rois (Night of the Kings, 2020), Robuste (opposite Gérard Depardieu, 2021), the historical series Germinal (2021), Netflix’s AKA (2023, as Youssef), Sage-homme, Lupin (season appearances), Furies (TV series), and numerous other film and television projects through the mid-2020s. He is frequently cast in authoritative, intense, or complex supporting roles that leverage his physical presence and grounded screen energy. In 2021 he directed his first short film, La Chimère. He has continued taking acting coaching and works across cinema, television, and voice-over.

PERSONAL LIFE

Tientcheu keeps his private life largely out of the public eye. As of available interviews (around 2023), he was not married and had not found a long-term partner he referred to as “the mom.” He continues to live in the Aulnay-sous-Bois area. He has expressed pride in his banlieue identity and Cameroonian heritage while building a career in French cinema. He has also been noted for volunteer work with the Salvation Army (Armée du Salut) in earlier profiles.

Tientcheu is regarded as one of the strong character actors to emerge from the French banlieue cinema wave of the 2010s and 2020s. His path—from security work and late entry into formal training to prominent roles in award-winning films—has been highlighted in interviews and the documentary La Mort de Danton. He remains active in both film and television.
