Nneka Agbanusi

EARLY LIFE

Nneka Nwando Agbanusi was born on 19 October 1989 in Nigeria. She hails from Ogidi in Anambra State and is of Igbo ethnicity. She grew up in a family with siblings (brothers and sisters) under Mr. and Mrs. Agbanusi. As a child, she was slim and skinny but suffered from asthma. Steroid medication prescribed for her condition contributed to significant weight gain, compounded by periods of depression. She has openly discussed these experiences as shaping her later advocacy for body positivity and mental health. She attended Louisville Girls High School for her secondary education before proceeding to university.

CAREER

Agbanusi is a communication graduate from Covenant University. She began her professional career in journalism: she interned as a correspondent with Champion Newspaper, worked as a field reporter for Business Day Newspaper (covering aviation, industry, and education beats), and was one of the pioneering content producers for Happenings Magazine in early 2013. She later gained experience in film distribution (theatrical and non-theatrical) and has worked in customer service and support (including roles associated with PlayMock). She has also been involved in a restaurant/lounge and catering startup (PotsnPan LTD). She rose to wider public attention around 2021 through viral dance videos on Instagram, where she showcases energetic dancing, plus-size fashion, and lifestyle content. Her confident, joyful performances challenged body stereotypes and earned her features, including interviews with BBC Pidgin. She promotes body positivity by encouraging plus-size men and women to accept themselves and live freely. She is active as a content creator across platforms, sharing dance videos, fashion try-ons/hauls, fitness/mobility routines, comedy, food, and mental health discussions. She has a YouTube channel focused on lifestyle, fitness, dance, and advocacy. She appeared in the movie Threads, Vibes & A Dash of Purple (as Ebun). She was a finalist in Nigeria’s first weight-loss reality TV show, The FaSttest Shedder (2014), and won the Tush Awards Young Journalist of the Year in 2014. Her work as a plus-size model and influencer centers on fashion inspiration, self-expression, and reducing stigma around mental health and body image.

PERSONAL LIFE

Agbanusi is not married. She has been in a relationship and previously shared public moments with boyfriend Henry Arthur Clems. She keeps aspects of her private life relatively low-key while focusing on self-acceptance and empowerment. She is a strong advocate for body positivity, particularly for plus-size individuals, and mental health awareness. She has spoken about overcoming body shaming, including past struggles that led her to contemplate suicide, and now uses her platform to encourage others facing similar challenges. She emphasizes self-love, confidence, and rejecting societal stigma around size. She is also a published romance fiction author, with her novel Jingle Desire available for purchase.
