Biography
EARLY LIFE
Mandlakayise Walter Dube Jr. was born in Mabopane, a black township outside Pretoria, South Africa, during the height of apartheid. He was the fourth of five children in a relatively privileged family. His father, Walter Sr., was one of the few Black South Africans licensed to trade in diamonds and also owned shops, a gas station, and a restaurant. The family home had a television (a rarity at the time) and served as a safe house for the anti-apartheid underground. His father frequently traveled to the United States and brought back recordings of speeches by Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, as well as films about the Black Panthers, which influenced the young Mandla. At the same time, he was raised with strong African traditional values; his grandfather taught him the Zulu philosophy Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu (“A person is a person through other people”). At age 15, due to academic struggles, his parents sent him to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where his older brother was studying. After finishing high school there, he enrolled at Clark Atlanta University, majoring in film and communications. He later earned an MFA in cinematography from the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles, studying under master cinematographer Bill Dill.
CAREER
Dube began his career behind the camera as a cinematographer and camera operator. Early credits include work on major international productions such as The Italian Job (2003), Men in Black II, and other Hollywood and South African projects. He also shot music videos (including for Hugh Masekela) and commercials. He founded his own production company early on as a way to create opportunities when doors were closed to him as a cinematographer. Key Directorial Works: Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu (2016/2017) – His feature directorial debut, a biopic about the young anti-apartheid activist executed in 1979. The film won Best Film of South Africa and Best Original Song at the RapidLion Film Festival, the Chairman’s Award at the Zanzibar International Film Festival, and earned Thabo Rametsi a Best Actor award at the BRICS Film Festival. Silverton Siege (2022, Netflix) – A thriller dramatizing the 1980 Pretoria bank siege that helped popularize the slogan “Free Nelson Mandela.” Heart of the Hunter (2024, Netflix) – An action thriller that became the first African film to open at #1 on Netflix globally. Jiva! (2021–2023) – Netflix dance series (director/creator). Documentary work: The Great War (2024, History Channel – four-hour cinematic documentary), Echoes in the Valley of the Mapungubwe (both seasons), and cinematography on the multi-award-winning Sobukwe: A Great Soul. Upcoming / In Development: Bisesero: A Story of Resistance (also known as Bisesero: A Daughter’s Story) Yasuke: Way of the Butterfly (about the African samurai) A Miriam Makeba documentary (in post-production stages as of recent reports) Projects related to King Shaka, the Battle of Isandlwana, and others He has also worked in theatre and continues to develop historical epics rooted in African stories.
PERSONAL LIFE
Dube maintains a relatively private personal life. He has spoken about the difficulties of being a Black South African filmmaker navigating both local and international industries. He is associated with the production company Pambili Media. He has also lectured in cinematography at institutions such as Wits Television and Tshwane University of Technology.
Mandla Dube is regarded as one of the leading contemporary South African filmmakers of his generation, particularly noted for bringing high-production-value African historical and political stories to global streaming platforms. His journey from township childhood under apartheid, through American film schools, to directing Netflix hits embodies both personal resilience and a commitment to African storytelling on an international scale.
