Biography
EARLY LIFE
Mame Bineta Sane was born on 3 February 2000 in Dakar, Senegal, and grew up in Thiaroye, a working-class suburb of the capital. She did not receive a regular formal education and instead began working as an apprentice tailor in Thiaroye. She had no prior experience in acting or drama and had never set foot in a cinema before being cast in her breakthrough role.
CAREER
Sane had never acted before director Mati Diop discovered her in 2018 during an extensive street casting process in Thiaroye for the lead role in Diop’s feature debut Atlantics (Atlantique, 2019). After workshops, she was cast as Ada, a young woman in Dakar whose lover and other young men disappear at sea while attempting migration; the film blends romance, social realism, and supernatural elements. Atlantics premiered in Dakar, received strong critical acclaim, screened at major festivals, and won the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival (making Diop the first Black woman director in the main competition). For her performance, Sane received a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actress (2020), a Lumière Award nomination for Best Female Revelation (2020), and a Black Reel Award nomination for Outstanding Breakthrough Performance by a Female (2020). She is also credited in the short film Don’t Wake the Sleeping Child (2025). In parallel, she has built a modeling career, appearing in high-profile fashion work including Miu Miu campaigns and shows (Spring/Summer 2022 and later seasons), Chanel (including Couture and Métiers d’Art presentations), Mugler, Marni, and editorials such as for Vogue China. She is represented by Supreme Management in Paris.
PERSONAL LIFE
Sane has referenced growing up with siblings in a modest household in Thiaroye and has expressed gratitude for her parents’ support. She maintains strong ties to her community and continues to live in Senegal while balancing international professional opportunities.
Sane’s sudden rise from a tailor’s apprentice in Thiaroye to an internationally recognized actress and fashion model is frequently cited as a notable example of authentic, non-professional casting in contemporary African cinema. Her work in Atlantics brought global attention to stories of migration, youth, and everyday life in Senegal, while her fashion presence has further expanded her visibility. She remains connected to her roots while continuing to develop her career in film and modeling.
