Biography
EARLY LIFE
Amadou Mbow was born on 15 May 1993 in Dakar, Senegal, and grew up there. He is the son of a Senegalese jeweler of Fulani (Peul) origin from the Futa region and is the eldest son of his mother; he has three sisters. During his teenage years, basketball played a major role in his life; he practiced for several years with the DUC (Dakar University Club) basketball section. He later left competitive sport to focus on the audiovisual world, training himself as a self-taught graphic designer, content creator, and photography enthusiast. He has long been a cinephile.
CAREER
Mbow had no prior professional acting experience when he was discovered by director Mati Diop during a street casting (casting sauvage) in Dakar (Almadies area) around 2017. He was cast as the young policeman Issa in Diop’s feature debut Atlantics (Atlantique, 2019). In the film, Issa investigates a mysterious fire that destroys Ada’s nuptial bed on her wedding night amid a story blending romance, migration, and supernatural elements. Atlantics premiered in Dakar, received strong critical acclaim, screened at major festivals, and won the Grand Prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. For his performance, Mbow was selected among the César 2020 Révélations (Most Promising Actor category shortlist). Subsequent credits include the role of Assane in Alice Winocour’s Revoir Paris (Paris Memories, 2022) and Joseph in the television series Unwanted (2023, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel). He has also appeared in shorter projects such as Leni Africo (2024) and other independent works. Before and alongside acting, he has worked in graphic design, video content creation, and related audiovisual fields. He has expressed interest in artistic direction and continues to develop his screen career.
Amadou Mbow’s breakthrough in Atlantics marked a notable entry into international cinema for a non-professional actor from Dakar’s audiovisual scene. His trajectory reflects a combination of self-directed creative interests and opportunistic casting that has opened doors to European film and television productions while remaining rooted in Senegalese cinema.
