Ibrahima Mbaye

EARLY LIFE

Ibrahima Mbaye was born on 9 August 1974 in Dakar, Senegal. He developed an early interest in performance. His artistic path took shape during his school years; filmmaker Moussa Sène Absa noticed him and cast him in an early role, which helped confirm his vocation. He left formal academic studies near the end of secondary school to pursue professional arts training.

CAREER

Mbaye trained at the École Nationale des Arts in Dakar from 1995 to 1999, specializing in dramatic arts, and earned the First Prize in Tragedy for his performance as Hamlet. He became a resident (pensionnaire) of the Théâtre National Daniel Sorano in Dakar, Senegal’s premier national theatre, where he has performed classical and contemporary roles and continues to work as an actor and trainer/coach for other performers. His screen career began in the mid-1990s. Early film credits include Twist à Popenguine (Ça twiste à Popenguine, 1994, directed by Moussa Sène Absa, as Eddy) and Karmen Geï (2001, directed by Joseph Gaï Ramaka, as Sidar). He has appeared frequently in Senegalese and African cinema, including Madame Brouette (2002, Moussa Sène Absa), Ramata (2009, Léandre-Alain Baker), Black (2009, as Lamine), L’Absence (2009, Mama Keïta, as Djibril), En attendant le vote... (2011/2012, Missa Hébié), Wùlu (2016, as Driss), Yao (2018, opposite Omar Sy), Atlantics (Atlantique, 2019, directed by Mati Diop, as Commissaire Sy), Xalé (2022, Moussa Sène Absa, as Atoumane), and Ni chaînes ni maîtres (No Chains No Masters, 2024, directed by Simon Moutaïrou, as Massamba). He has also worked extensively in television series and telefilms, including L’or de Ninki Nanka, Sakho & Mangane, Colombine, and others. In addition to acting, he works as a stage director and actor trainer.

Mbaye has received several distinctions, including the Douta d’Or for Best Actor at the Senegalese theatre awards (2010), acting prizes at African film festivals (such as Best Supporting Actor at Khouribga for En attendant le vote...), and recognition at FESPACO-related events. In 2019 he was promoted to the rank of Chevalier in the Ordre National du Lion of Senegal for his contributions to the arts. He is regarded as one of the established figures of contemporary Senegalese theatre and cinema, with a career spanning stage, film, and television across more than three decades.
