Biography

EARLY LIFE

Connie Temweka Gabisile Chiume was born on 5 June 1952 in the mining town of Welkom, Free State, South Africa. Her father, Wright Tadeyo Chiume (died 1983), was a migrant worker from Nkhata Bay (Usisya area), Malawi; her mother, MaNdlovu (died 2020), was from KwaZulu-Natal. She was one of nine children and spent her early childhood in Welkom. She completed her matriculation in the Eastern Cape, began training as a nurse, and later switched to teaching, graduating with a teaching degree in 1976. In 1977, amid the political climate of apartheid and student uprisings, she left South Africa and joined a touring musical group, performing in Greece and Israel. Her cousin Ephraim Mganda Chiume is a Malawian politician.

CAREER

Chiume began her performing career in the late 1970s with stage roles in productions including Porgy and Bess, Ipi Ntombi, and Little Shop of Horrors while abroad. She returned to South Africa as apartheid was ending and established herself as one of the country’s most respected screen and stage actresses. Early television and film work included Inkom’ Edla Yodwa (Thembi, 1989), Warriors from Hell (1990), The Air Up There (1994), Chikin Biznis (1999), I Dreamed of Africa (2000), and In My Country (2004). She won the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for Soul City (2000) and later received a SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her long-running role as Stella Moloi in Zone 14 (2007–2015). Other major television roles included Mamokete Khuse in Rhythm City, Mam’Sonto Molefe in Gomora, appearances in Yizo Yizo 2, Queen Sono, Housekeepers, and later projects such as Soon Comes Night and Blood Legacy (as Madlamini Ndlovu). Internationally she gained wide recognition as Zawavari, a Mining Tribe Elder / Elder Stateswoman, in Marvel’s Black Panther (2018) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). She also appeared as Sarabi in Beyoncé’s Black Is King (2020) and in films including Blessers, Seriously Single, Losing Lerato, Heart of the Hunter (2024), and others. In 2022 she received a lifetime achievement award at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs). She remained active into 2024.

PERSONAL LIFE

Chiume was married from 1985 to 2004 and was the mother of four children (two sons and two daughters). One of her sons, Nongelo Chiume, publicly confirmed details surrounding her final hospital admission. She was known for her warmth, resilience, and dedication to her craft and family. She passed away on 6 August 2024 at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg after being admitted for a medical procedure; her family requested privacy. President Cyril Ramaphosa issued an official statement mourning her as a creative icon whose work authentically portrayed South African experiences and represented the continent internationally.

Connie Chiume was widely regarded as a pioneering and versatile figure who bridged the eras of apartheid-era and post-apartheid South African television and film, while also achieving international visibility through the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Beyoncé’s visual album. Her work spanned stage, soap operas, dramas, and major Hollywood productions. She is remembered for her professionalism, dignity, and the authenticity she brought to maternal, elder, and authoritative roles. Tributes poured in from the South African government, industry colleagues, and global audiences upon her death.
