Nollywood's growing appetite for indigenous-language stories has received another major boost as Ikenga: The Last Festival crosses the ₦100 million mark at the box office. The Igbo-language cultural epic has reportedly earned ₦103.4 million in cinemas, just one month after its release on August 21, 2026. The Milestone was announced by the film's executive producer, Anita Odiakaose, while distributor FilmOne also shared the acheivement.
From ₦22 million to over ₦100 million
Ikenga had already attracted attention during its opening weekend. The film reportedly earned ₦22 million in its first three days, making it the highest-grossing opening weekend for an Igbo film in West Africa at the time. By September 7, it had crossed ₦75 million and was being reported as the highest-grossing Igbo title of all time.
Its latest milestone pushes that performance even further. FilmOne announced that the movie had reached ₦103.4 million and described it as the highest-grossing Igbo title of all time in West Africa.
A story rooted in Igbo culture
Directed by Darlington Kelechi, Ikenga: The Last Festival is an Igbo-language epic featuring a number of well-known Nollywood names, including Pete Edochie, Nkem Owoh, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Patience Ozokwor, Zubby Michael, Beverly Osu, Jide Achufusi, Regina Daniels and Destiny Etiko. Its box office performance is particularly notable because the film is built around indigenous language and cultural storytelling.
For years, Nollywood has produced films across English, Pidgin and Nigeria's indigenous languages. Ikenga's performance provides another example of the commercial audience that can exist for stories that place Nigerian culture and language at the centre of the cinema experience.
What the milestone means for Nollywood
The success of Ikenga also comes at a time when Nigerian cinema continues to record major box-office milestones. The film's progression from ₦22 million in its opening weekend to more than ₦100 million within roughly a month demonstrates the importance of sustained audience interest beyond an opening weekend. It also adds another notable chapter to the story of indigenous-language cinema in Nigeria.
Whether Ikenga can maintain its momentum during the remainder of its cinema run remains to be seen. For now, however, the film has already secured a significant milestone - and its success puts even more attentio on the commercial potential of Igbo-language storytelling in Nollywood.
