Biography
EARLY LIFE
Xolile Tshabalala was born on 9 April 1977 in Vrede, Free State, South Africa (she has shared that she was born in her grandfather’s bedroom). She is named after her paternal grandmother. She developed a particularly close bond with her late grandfather (who passed away when she was about 12), and has spoken publicly about the lasting spiritual and guiding influence he continues to have on her life and career decisions. She attended the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg, where she graduated with honours and was named Best Overall Performer. During her studies she performed alongside and was mentored by Thembi Mtshali-Jones; they appeared together in The Crucible at the Market Theatre.
CAREER
Tshabalala began her professional screen career in 2002 with the long-running SABC soap Generations, where she played the memorable character Julia Motene (sometimes listed as Julia Montene) from 2002 to 2005. The role made her a household name in South Africa. After taking a break around 2005–2008 to study at the New York Film Academy (focusing on directing, producing, writing, and related skills), she returned to South African screens.
