EARLY LIFE

Bimbo Thomas (Abimbola Idowu Thomas) was born and raised on Lagos Island (specifically the Obadina area) in Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the fifth child in a family of seven and has spoken of a lively childhood that included fetching water from public taps, playing in open spaces with peers, and growing up surrounded by many boys, which contributed to her tomboyish energy. Her father (a Lagosian, now late) initially preferred she pursue law, while her mother supported her creative interests. She studied Mass Communication at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, while awaiting admission, then transferred to the University of Lagos, where she earned a degree in Creative Arts (Theatre Arts focus).

CAREER

Bimbo Thomas began acting while still an undergraduate. A neighbourhood friend, Kelvin Ikeduba, introduced her to the industry; she also connected with Tayo Odueke (Sikirat Skindodo) at UNILAG. Her mother helped link her with Abbey Lanre, leading to training with the Odun Ifa Group (under Yinka Quadri’s circle). Early experiences included work with Saidi Balogun and the late Moji Olaiya. Her breakthrough came with the role of Nikky in Funke Akindele’s Omo Ghetto (2010) and its sequel Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020). She has said the street-tough character drew from her Lagos Island upbringing and was among her most challenging roles. Other notable credits include Jelili (2011), Eruku Nla, Farayola (2009), Omoniyun (2019), Hell Cat (2019), Honeymoon Palava (2021), Rancor (2022), Sabinus The Best Man (2023), Unforgivable (Ainidariji), and various Yoruba-language films such as Oludamoran, Aye Are, and Omo Poly. After the success of the “thug”/ghetto image from Omo Ghetto, she deliberately reduced acceptance of similar roles to avoid typecasting and showcase versatility, even though the decision temporarily slowed her career and affected income and some relationships. She later focused more on production and other aspects of filmmaking. She has described herself as a long-time “hustler” who maintained side businesses even while acting, and she works as an event host and brand influencer. She is the Founder and Creative Director of Bimbally Atelier (fashion) and has been linked to other entrepreneurial ventures including fragrance and earlier retail interests.

PERSONAL LIFE

She is a mother to one son, Jayden, born in July 2016 in Texas, USA. She has described motherhood as transformative, prioritising her son and noting that it made her more considerate. She keeps details of her romantic life and the identity of her son’s father private and has not publicly confirmed a marriage. In interviews she has discussed balancing career, entrepreneurship, and parenting, and has addressed single motherhood without stigma. She maintains a relatively private personal life while sharing occasional family moments, especially around birthdays.

Thomas has spoken openly about industry challenges, including early restrictions under certain production houses, the need for multiple income streams in Nigeria, and growing a thick skin toward critics and online comments. She prefers simple, everyday fashion (shirts, jeans, sneakers) and values authenticity. In recent years she has continued acting selectively, producing, hosting, and building her fashion brand while raising her son. She remains known for the iconic Nikky role while actively working to expand her professional range.
