Ade Laoye

EARLY LIFE

Ade Laoye was born on 5 April 1984 in Dayton, Ohio, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba origin from Ede in Osun State. She is one of five sisters and comes from a close-knit, artistically inclined family with a strong musical heritage. Her granduncle was Oba John Adetoyese Laoye, the Timi of Ede, popularly known as “The Drummer King.” She spent her formative years primarily in Lagos and Ibadan, Nigeria, where she grew up surrounded by music, singing, dancing, and performance. She has described herself as the “drama queen” of the family who loved performing in front of the mirror. She made her stage debut as a child (including a role as Mary in a Christmas play at age five). Although her parents initially preferred more conventional careers such as medicine or engineering (or computer science, following her father’s field), she ultimately chose theatre.

CAREER

Laoye trained in Theatre Arts at Pennsylvania State University in the United States. Immediately after graduating, she began professional work in American regional theatre, including the Arden Theatre Company (where she received a Barrymore Award nomination for Best Ensemble in a Musical), the Walnut Street Theatre (Acting Apprentice Program), and TheatreWorksUSA in New York City. She has also worked with Playbill Magazine and performed in straight plays, musicals, short films, and commercials across the US. Around 2012 she relocated to Nigeria and established herself in Nollywood. Her early Nigerian credits include Knocking on Heaven’s Door (directed by Emem Isong), Lunchtime Heroes, Dowry, Retreat, and the Africa Magic series Hush (as Oye Agunbiade), which became one of her higher-profile roles. Later notable film and television credits include: Finding Hubby and Finding Hubby 2 (as Oyin) Knockout Blessing (title role) Castle & Castle (Netflix/EbonyLife) Walking with Shadows Ayinla A Naija Christmas Collision Course / Collision The Black Book (as Vic Kalu) Silence (2024, as Teni Popoola) Additional appearances in projects such as Lizard, You Me Maybe, The Tribunal, stage musicals including Saro the Musical and Wakaa the Musical, and others. She is also a teaching artist and co-founder of The Real Deal Actors’ Workshop, an intensive training platform for aspiring actors. She continues to work across stage, screen, and education while maintaining a presence in both Nigerian and international projects.

Ade Laoye is recognized for her versatility, strong stage background, and ability to move between theatre, television, and film. Her dual Nigerian-American upbringing and formal training have contributed to a polished, professional approach that has earned her steady work in contemporary Nollywood and beyond.
