Set on the ragged fringes of Johannesburg, South Africa, Tsotsi follows a brutal teenage gangster who leads a small crew of thieves. One rainy night, after callously carjacking and shooting a wealthy woman, he discovers a crying three-month-old infant in the back seat. Instead of abandoning the child, he takes it back to his shantytown shack—an act that triggers buried childhood trauma and sparks a slow, agonizing moral awakening.

Storyline

The film opens by establishing the bleak, harsh reality of the Soweto shantytown. David, who goes strictly by the name Tsotsi, runs a tightly knit four-man gang that survives on robberies. During a routine mugging on a crowded subway train, the sociopathic Butcher fatally stabs a passenger just to steal his cash. Afterward, at a local shebeen (pub), Boston—haunted by the murder—confronts Tsotsi, questioning whether he possesses even a shred of human decency. Enraged and unable to face the truth, Tsotsi violently beats Boston and flees into the pouring rain. In a blind panic, Tsotsi wanders into an affluent, gated suburb where he spots Pumla Dube pulling her car up to her house. In a flash of cold-blooded desperation, Tsotsi carjacks her, shoots her when she screams, and speeds away into the dark night. As Tsotsi prepares to strip the vehicle, a cry rings out from the back seat—it is Pumla's infant son. Rather than running away, an unexplainable urge takes hold of Tsotsi. He places the baby in a ragged shopping bag and sneaks him back into his shantytown shack. The presence of the helpless child begins to unravel Tsotsi's hardened exterior. It triggers visceral, painful flashbacks of his own childhood: running away from an abusive father and a mother who was dying of a terminal illness. Realizing he cannot feed the starving infant condensed milk, Tsotsi spots Miriam, a young mother in the village who makes a living weaving baskets. At gunpoint, he forces her to breastfeed the kidnapped baby. The emotional climax peaks when Tsotsi decides he must return the infant to his grieving, paralyzed mother and father. He walks up to the Dube residence in broad daylight to give the baby back. However, the police intercept him at the outer gates. In a beautifully redemptive finale, tears streaming down his face, he gently hands the healthy baby back to John Dube and raises his hands in surrender, finally reclaiming the humanity he had stripped away years prior.
