Biography
EARLY LIFE
Presley Oageng Chweneyagae was born on 19 October 1984 in Mafikeng (now Mahikeng), North West Province, South Africa. He was named after Elvis Presley, his mother’s favourite singer. His mother, Agnes Keagile (a police officer), encouraged him into the arts so he would not follow a difficult path common in their community. He began acting in church plays and community theatre. At the age of 10 he joined drama classes at the North West Arts Council (later the Mmabana Arts, Culture and Sports Foundation), where he trained under figures including playwright Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom. He later enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology to study acting but left after landing the lead role in Tsotsi.
CAREER
Chweneyagae rose to international prominence with his debut feature-film role as David “Tsotsi” in Gavin Hood’s Tsotsi (2005), adapted from Athol Fugard’s novel. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards — South Africa’s first Oscar in that category. His performance earned him the Black Movie Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in Los Angeles. Family tributes after his death described him as a devoted husband and father. He died on 27 May 2025 at the age of 40 after experiencing breathing problems / respiratory complications. His agency (MLA – Moonyeenn Lee Associates), the South African government, SAFTA, the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), and the wider industry paid public tributes, describing him as a “legend of South African cinema” and a “gifted storyteller.” In later years he was implicated in a National Lottery-related investigation involving the Southern African Youth Movement (SAYM), of which he was an ambassador. The matter continued after his death with asset preservation orders.
Presley Chweneyagae was widely regarded as one of South Africa’s finest actors of his generation — a trailblazer who brought global attention to local storytelling through Tsotsi and later became a beloved television star and theatre force. Tributes from government, SAFTA, the NFVF, fellow artists, and the public emphasised his artistry, generosity, and lasting impact on South African cinema, television, and stage.
