Matters Of The Heart

Kambili arrives at Summer Hills Hospital in Lagos with a relationship she keeps invisible. She and Dr. Morris, another physician on staff, hide their romance from colleagues, but the secrecy starts to show. Morris cancels plans and avoids her once her rounds begin. Her first patient is Bruno Obong, a civil engineer waiting for a heart transplant. Kambili sings and dances in his room to lift his mood, and Bruno charms her with his humor. The warning about Morris comes from Bruno's mother, Professor Hilda Obang, who tells Kambili that Morris has been seen with a nurse. Kambili checks Morris's phone and finds photographs of the affair. She ends their four-year relationship on the spot. Morris turns bitter and threatens to report her closeness with Bruno to the hospital administration. Bruno tells Kambili he loves her and proposes. He does not hide that his heart could give out at any moment. Kambili accepts, and the wedding is set for Christmas Eve inside the hospital. Morris intercepts Bruno before the ceremony and calls him selfish. He says Bruno is turning Kambili into a widow. Bruno doubts, and Kambili pulls him back to the altar. The vows go ahead. Bruno's condition worsens soon after, and he is moved to the ICU. Kambili waits outside and starts to feel dizzy, then nauseous. Hilda asks whether she might be pregnant. Before she can answer, Morris brings word that Mount Helix Hospital in Abuja has contacted them about a possible heart donor. Hilda learns the donor is real, and Bruno goes into surgery. He gets the transplant and recovers. Years later, Kambili, Bruno, and their child arrive at the family home, happy and together.
