Samantha Mugatsia

EARLY LIFE

Samantha Mugatsia was born in 1992 in Nairobi, Kenya, the child of Grace Gitau. She grew up in Nairobi. Before acting she was active in the city’s creative scene as a drummer for the band The Yellow Machine (also referred to as Yellow Light Machine), performed at festivals and events, worked as a model, and engaged in visual art and DJ activities. She enrolled in a law degree at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa but paused her studies to focus on acting.

CAREER

Mugatsia had no prior professional acting experience when she met director Wanuri Kahiu in November 2016 at an artists’ pop-up event in Nairobi. Kahiu shared the script for Rafiki, and Mugatsia accepted the lead role of Kena Mwaura despite never having acted. She prepared intensively over several months with acting lessons, mirror exercises, and character immersion. Rafiki (2018), based on the short story Jambula Tree by Ugandan writer Monica Arac de Nyeko, follows the developing romantic relationship between two young women (Kena and Ziki, played by Sheila Munyiva) in a Kenyan context where homosexuality is criminalised. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, becoming the first Kenyan feature selected for the official programme. It was banned in Kenya by the Kenya Film Classification Board. The ban was temporarily lifted following legal action so the film could screen locally and qualify for Academy Award consideration. Mugatsia’s performance as the quietly observant Kena was widely praised (described as “quietly watchful” by The Washington Post). She won the Best Actress award at the 2019 FESPACO (Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou) for the role. She has also appeared in the French television programme L’invité.

Samantha Mugatsia remains best known for her breakthrough in Rafiki, a landmark film in Kenyan and African queer cinema that sparked significant discussion about representation, censorship, and storytelling. Alongside acting she continues involvement in music and visual arts.
