Biography

EARLY LIFE

Rosemary Zimu was born on 15 April 1993 in Johannesburg, South Africa (with some profiles also noting Vereeniging, Gauteng). She grew up in a joint family of seven children and was raised primarily by her mother, Blessing(s) Zimu. Siblings include DJ Themba and Zanele Zimu. Her interest in theatre, singing, and acting began in early childhood, strongly influenced by her grandmother, who would act out stories for the children. She attended St. Andrew’s School for Girls, where she studied drama as a matric subject. After high school she obtained a certification/diploma in labour law. Although qualified, she chose not to practise law and instead pursued entertainment full-time, supported by her mother.

CAREER

Rosemary began performing in theatre, including a South African production of Moulin Rouge (around 2011). She made her feature-film debut in the Nollywood movie Champagne (2014/2015) at age 21, playing a femme fatale scam artist and earning a nomination for Most Promising Actress of the Year. She transitioned into South African television with the Mzansi Magic film Wena Wedwa (2018), followed by recurring roles: Veronica on Isidingo (2018–2019), a cameo as Crystal in Netflix’s Shadow (2019), a peer educator in MTV Shuga Down South, Thembeka on Generations: The Legacy (from 2020), Lily/Lucy Juice on Scandal! (from 2020), and Warona on The Queen (from 2020). Her breakthrough came as the lead Zinhle Manzini in Netflix’s Savage Beauty (Season 1 in 2022; Season 2 in 2024), a role that earned her a SAFTA (South African Film and Television Awards) nomination for Best Actress in a TV Drama. Other notable credits include Zoleka in Ayeye: Stripped (2022), the lead in the film Nine (2023; premiered at Johannesburg Film Festival and later at Cannes; she won a SAFTA for Best Newcomer), a pivotal role in My Brother’s Keeper, Lethabo in Strings Attached (2026 return to TV after a period focused on motherhood), Mmabatho Nkomo in How to Ruin Diwali: Meet the Parents, and additional film work such as Happiness Is and Thato Ya Modimo. She has also appeared in commercials for major brands (including Debonairs, Nedbank, Volkswagen, Vodacom, FNB, and others) and maintains a parallel career as a singer and songwriter (with an album titled Roro Says referenced in earlier profiles). She is managed by Owen S Management (OSM Talent).

PERSONAL LIFE

Rosemary is married to Isaac (Nkosinathi) Mnguni. The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter, in April 2025. She has spoken publicly about the transformative experience of pregnancy, motherhood, and marriage, describing motherhood as “the greatest role I’ve ever booked” and noting the patience, gratitude, and emotional growth it brought. She marked her first wedding anniversary as MaMnguni around April 2026. In July 2026 she publicly mourned the passing of her mother after a period of illness, sharing an emotional tribute that highlighted her mother’s love, sacrifices, and the profound impact of the loss. She has also credited her grandparents’ long marriage (over 54 years) as an inspiration for seeking lasting partnership.

Rosemary has balanced high-profile acting with personal milestones, stepping back briefly after becoming a mother before returning to an emotionally layered role in Strings Attached. She frequently credits faith, family, and early artistic influences for her resilience. Public profiles describe her as versatile across soapie, drama, thriller, and film formats, with growing international visibility through Netflix projects.
