Biography
EARLY LIFE
Ebun Oloyede, popularly known as Olaiya Igwe, was born on July 27, 1957, in Kenta, Oke-Ejigbo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. He grew up in a large polygamous household where his father had six wives, though only five gave birth to children; his mother was the second to the last wife. As a child, he admired the appearance of tribal marks and personally insisted on receiving them, even though family tradition mandated them only for the firstborn child of each wife. He found the marks “sharp” and attractive at the time. Olaiya attended St. Judes Primary School and Premier Grammar School in Abeokuta for his early education. He later pursued Mass Communication studies at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta. In 2022, at an advanced stage in his career, he graduated from Crescent University in Abeokuta with a Diploma in Film Performance & Communication, alongside other veteran actors like Mr. Latin. His childhood experiences, including the tribal marks he later came to regret, shaped his worldview. He has described the practice as stemming from limited exposure in the past rather than authentic culture, noting that DNA testing has since diminished its relevance for identifying lineage. Despite initial regret, he later appreciated tribal marks after observing them on late filmmaker Ade Love and veteran actor Sunday Omobolanle (popularly known as Aluwe).
CAREER
Olaiya Igwe is a veteran Nollywood actor, producer, and director with a career spanning over five decades since the 1970s. He began his acting journey in the 1970s under the guidance of his boss, Musibau Shodimu (popularly known as Otolo Daddy), starting with theatre work before transitioning into film. He has appeared in more than 100 movies and produced over 20 films, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the Yoruba film industry. His notable productions include Iru Esin (considered one of his magnum opus), Alase Aye, Ololade Mr Money, and Abela Pupa. As an actor, he has delivered memorable performances in films such as Blacksmith: Alagbede (2024), Ijakumo: The Born Again Stripper (2022, as Man), Jagbajantis Reloaded (2022, as Baba Legacy), U-Turn (2022, as Mr. Kamoru), Obankoba (2021, as Oba Akilekun), Saheed Esu (2020, as Baba Anyila), Mokalik (2019, as Daddy Jide), Diamonds in the Sky (2019, as Salamander), Ayi tale (2013, as Oloye Demola), Jelili (2011, as Alade), and others like Kosi Tabi Sugbon, Baale Oko Ilu, the TV series Awon Aladun De, and Ile Alayo. He has also directed projects, including 50/50 (1992) and King of Thieves (2022). Olaiya has commented on industry trends, such as the rise of skit-making, and has shared insights into the challenges of piracy and financial setbacks in filmmaking. His work often reflects deep cultural roots and storytelling traditions of the Yoruba genre, earning him recognition as a respected elder statesman in Nollywood.
PERSONAL LIFE
Olaiya Igwe is a family-oriented man who has described himself as a very calm person off-camera and a father of many children. He is married, though his wife has relocated abroad. He is blessed with six children, including his son Ridwan Oloyede, who has publicly spoken about his father’s life and regrets over not completing university education earlier in life. Olaiya has faced significant personal challenges, including a battle with kidney stones that required surgery; he recounted not having money for the procedure initially but credited divine intervention for a second chance at life. In 2021, he endured a near-bankruptcy experience after losing approximately N52 million to movie piracy, an ordeal that nearly caused him a heart attack. These trials tested his resilience, but he has remained grounded in faith and family. Olaiya has openly discussed regretting his tribal marks as an adult, viewing them as an act of “wickedness” imposed without full understanding, though he later found appreciation for them through cultural figures. He maintains a low-key personal life focused on family support and personal growth, often emphasizing calm demeanor and fatherly responsibilities.
Olaiya Igwe remains an active and influential figure in Nigerian cinema, blending traditional theatre roots with modern film production. His late graduation from university in 2022 symbolizes lifelong learning and dedication to his craft. He has used his platform to discuss personal regrets, such as tribal marks, and broader industry issues like piracy and the evolving role of digital content. Olaiya is known for his calm personality, resilience in the face of health and financial challenges, and commitment to family. He continues to inspire younger generations of filmmakers and actors through his extensive body of work and public reflections on life and culture. His Instagram presence often highlights his film projects and personal milestones.
