Biography
EARLY LIFE
Maxwell Simba was born on 21 March 2005 in Kenya. He grew up in the small agricultural town of Kitale in the northern Rift Valley. The youngest of three siblings, he was raised mostly by his mother in a household of primarily women. From a young age he developed a passion for the arts, especially acting. He attended the prestigious Alliance High School on the outskirts of Nairobi, one of Kenya’s leading boys’ schools. There he participated in theatre and plays. His talent was noticed when casting directors visited the school seeking actors; he auditioned without initially knowing the project’s scale. After a callback he met British-Nigerian actor-director Chiwetel Ejiofor, who selected the then-15-year-old (with only school acting experience) for the lead role in the Netflix film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
CAREER
Simba’s breakthrough came with his acting debut as William Kamkwamba in the 2019 Netflix original film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, written and directed by Chiwetel Ejiofor (Ejiofor’s feature directorial debut). The film, based on the true story of Malawian innovator William Kamkwamba (an ALA alumnus), follows a 13-year-old who builds a windmill to save his village from famine. Simba prepared intensively: he worked with a Malawian dialect coach, read Kamkwamba’s memoir, spent time with the real William Kamkwamba, and balanced filming in Malawi (including extreme heat) with schoolwork. The production was supportive of his academic goals. The film premiered at Sundance (where it won the Alfred P. Sloan Award) and the Berlinale; it received strong critical attention and an NAACP Image Award nomination context. He later appeared as Young Amo (credited as Maxwell Owino) in the 2020 TV mini-series Majuto. Beyond acting, Simba has pursued directing and production. While at African Leadership Academy he participated in the Ubuntu Theatre Troupe, documented events on camera, and developed entrepreneurial projects. In 2021 he launched Young Blak and Talented Vision Studios (YBTVS), a production company aimed at supporting African creatives and addressing gaps in resources for film and creative work on the continent. He has cited the experience of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind as deepening his appreciation for filmmaking craft and global perspectives. He has also received formal training at the Mason Gross School of the Arts and continued academic and creative development, including studies linked to Dartmouth College.
PERSONAL LIFE
Simba keeps much of his private life out of the public eye. He has described himself as an actor, academic, leader, and artist whose interests include acting, singing, and dancing. He has spoken about balancing rigorous academics with creative pursuits and the importance of self-discipline. Family support (particularly from his mother) and the encouragement of mentors have been important to him. He has expressed a strong interest in telling African stories and supporting creatives on the continent.
Maxwell Simba is regarded as a talented young Kenyan talent who moved from school theatre to an international Netflix lead role while still a teenager, then continued education at African Leadership Academy and further institutions while building creative and entrepreneurial initiatives. He has emphasized the value of African stories, perseverance, and creating platforms for other African artists. His journey—from Kitale and Alliance High School through Hollywood sets and leadership education—illustrates a blend of artistic ambition, academic focus, and commitment to continental creative development.
