EARLY LIFE
Lemogang Peter Phetolo Tsipa was born on 6 May 1991 in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, to Alfred Tsipa and Sally Tsipa. He has two siblings. Although his father was Pedi and his mother Tswana, he grew up fully immersed in Zulu culture and language in KwaZulu-Natal. Diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at age nine, he channelled his energy into sports (soccer, rugby, cricket, swimming, athletics) and the performing arts. He matriculated at Grantleigh College in Richards Bay, where he developed an interest in drama. After a gap year exploring South Africa, he enrolled at AFDA in 2010 and graduated in 2012 with a BA in Live Performance.
CAREER
Tsipa began as a musician/singer-songwriter before focusing fully on acting. Shortly after graduating from AFDA, he made his film debut as a crewman in the international sci-fi film Alien Outpost (2014). Early television credits included Detective Dini Masilela in e.tv’s Traffic! and roles in Forced Love (SABC1 Shakespeare in Mzansi strand). He built an international résumé with supporting parts in Eye in the Sky (2015), Wallander (2015), The Book of Negroes (2015), Black Sails (2016), Roots (2016), The Dark Tower (2017), Troy: Fall of a City (2018), and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019, as Mike Kachigunda). Locally he played the lead Duma in Beyond the River (2017) and Bambatha in the popular telenovela Isithembiso (2017–2019). His breakthrough came as Shaka Zulu in the Mzansi Magic historical epic Shaka iLembe (2023–2025). The role required intensive physical training, mastery of traditional Zulu weaponry and dance, and a rigorous fitness regime; the series became one of the most awarded in SAFTA history. Subsequent work includes Blood Psalms (Showmax, 2022), the lead in the crime thriller Killer Front Page (SABC3, 2024), and appearances in Reyka and other projects. He continues to work across local and international film and television.
PERSONAL LIFE
Tsipa is multilingual, speaking Zulu, Xhosa, Tswana, English, and Afrikaans, which he draws on for character work. He remains private about romantic relationships and has no publicly confirmed spouse or children. He has spoken openly about how managing ADHD shaped his creative drive and discipline.
