Maureen Kunga

EARLY LIFE

Maureen Muthoni Kunga was born on 26 September 1989 in Kenya and raised in Lang’ata, Nairobi. She is the last-born. Her family has been highly supportive of her musical journey, attending her school plays, choir performances, and professional concerts. She attended Msongari for primary school and Kianda High School for secondary education. She has spoken of singing from a very young age (family jokes that she started in the womb), participating in kindergarten musicals (including a Nativity play as one of the wise men at age 5), church singing, and school performances. She studied Law at the University of Nairobi, followed by the Kenya School of Law, and qualified as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

CAREER

Maureen Kunga is best known as a vocalist and songwriter in the Kenyan Afropop group Elani. The group rose to prominence in the Kenyan and East African music scene, winning Best African Pop at the 2014 All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA). They released albums including Colours of Love and collaborated with artists such as Chameleone (“My Darling”). In 2016, Elani members (including Maureen) publicly raised concerns about royalty distribution with the Music Copyright Society of Kenya. She began singing professionally around 2008 while balancing studies. Elani’s debut album launch coincided with one of her final law school exams, illustrating her dual path. She has used her legal background to advocate for musicians’ rights regarding royalties and payments. Solo career: After years with Elani, she embarked on a solo path. Recent releases include reflective singles such as Salama, Nalia, and her debut solo single Majaliwa (2025), which she co-wrote and dedicated to her mother (inspired by real conversations encouraging her to finish education while pursuing music: “soma, elimika, wee imba”). She has described going solo as a “homecoming to myself” after growth, learning, and sharing space in a group. COVID-19 prompted a period of reflection, temporary exploration of other paths (including revisiting law and trying acting), before returning more fully to music. Acting: She has made acting appearances, including a major debut involving an onscreen kiss, and has spoken about the experience as part of self-discovery. She continues performing, songwriting, and balancing creative work with her professional legal qualification.

PERSONAL LIFE

Maureen married her partner in a private, invite-only ceremony around late August/early September 2019 on the shores of Lake Naivasha (white wedding), following a traditional ruracio (dowry) ceremony the previous year. She has deliberately kept her husband’s identity and much of her married life private, stating she does not post her partner online because he did not choose public life. She has described herself as a “mommy’s girl” with a strengthening relationship with her father and has shared songs dedicated to her mother. She values privacy regarding relationships, has spoken about mental health, therapy, journaling, spiritual exploration, and self-discovery (especially during and after the COVID-19 period). She is known as a cook, plays piano and guitar (received a classical guitar as a graduation gift), and has discussed weight-loss journeys and personal growth in interviews.

Maureen is recognised as a multi-talented artist who successfully combines a legal career with music. She is an introvert navigating a public industry, advocates for musicians’ rights, and emphasises authenticity, family values, faith, resilience, and personal timing. She has ventured into influencer work during the pandemic and remains active as a solo artist while maintaining strong ties to her Elani roots and private personal life. Her music blends African rhythms with contemporary Afropop/R&B, often carrying uplifting and reflective messages.
