The Thought Of You

Ebele, a Lagos professional, writes in her red diary after being passed over for a new hire. Her sister Kiama cheers her up, and rushing out, Ebele leaves the diary in a cab. Kunle, another passenger, keeps it. A false shop alarm makes Ebele and Kunle trade accusations. Hostility grows when Kunle joins her office as the new hire, though Ebele learns she has been promoted to director. They must collaborate on Project Gatsby, and they clash over design and even a plate of plantains. At home, Kunle reads the diary, calls the writer Nelly, and writes his own confessions in the same notebook. At the office, their rivalry stays fierce. After a robbery, Ebele suspects Kunle and reports an anonymous tip, but she apologizes when she realizes he is innocent. A heated argument in his car ends with Ebele storming out, and they meet again at a local akara stall. Their meetings soften their tone, and they learn they live near each other. Kunle learns from Kiama that Nelly is Ebele's nickname, and he realizes the woman he loves wrote the diary. He keeps the truth hidden to protect their connection. Ebele and Kunle grow close, meet at their favorite street food spot, hold hands, and share personal stories. Each writes in their journal about meeting someone special. Kunle hears that his father is hospitalized and rushes away just before the Project Gatsby pitch. Ebele presents alone, the client is impressed, and the project is won. Ebele later realizes Kunle knew all along that the diary he carried was hers, and she feels betrayed. She takes leave and writes a final entry saying she will wait for him at their akara spot between eight and nine every night. Kunle comes, and she confronts him. He says he was afraid of ruining what they had and cannot bear to lose her, and he tells her he is irrevocably in love with her. Ebele admits she loves him too. Kunle pulls her close, calls her 'Nebelie,' and they kiss.
