The Good Neighbor

Tai moves into a Lagos apartment with his young daughter Gaby. Richmond hands over the keys and mentions that the landlord lives next door. The landlady, Rachel, owns both units and becomes a fixture in Gaby's life, cooking meals and helping with school assignments while Tai works. Gaby tells Rachel that her father is a terrible cook and offers to make dinner for him. Rachel's fiancé, Smart, watches the bond with unease. When Gaby says she misses her late mother, Rachel comforts her and advises Tai to let Gaby attend a sleepover. Tai agrees, and they parent as a team. Smart insists on a weekend card game, Rachel resists, and in private Tai and Rachel confront their history. Rachel says she has moved on and reveals she is engaged, and both spend restless nights. Smart announces a business trip, and Tai returns to old memories. The truth comes through flashbacks. Rachel worked as a housekeeper for Tai and his ailing wife Evelyn, who asked Rachel to be a surrogate. Evelyn died after the child was born, and Tai raised Gaby unaware that Rachel had moved into the same compound, and neither recognized the other until the chance encounter. When Smart learns the truth, he declares a relationship built on a lie cannot continue and leaves. Gaby overhears and confronts Tai about his secrecy. In the chaos, Gaby collapses from low blood sugar, and Tai is guilt-ridden while Rachel desperately wants to be recognized as Gaby's mother. With Gaby recovering, Tai admits he cannot raise her alone and acknowledges that she needs her mother. He and Rachel agree to set aside the past for their daughter. At Gaby's bedside, Rachel apologizes for lying, and Gaby, pretending to sleep, whispers forgiveness. The three embrace as a family, and Tai decides they will remain in the neighborhood.
