Storyline
At home, Alero and Effa circle each other like two people speaking different tongues. She calls their arrangement enough; he calls it a delay. A reunion fires Effa’s jealousy when Alero greets Kene warmly, and a simple hello turns into an accusation of betrayal. Her boss dangles a promotion, and for a moment Alero tastes the future she wants, only to watch the partners hand it to a seasoned candidate. Effa comforts her with one hand and cages her with the other, ordering her to write an apology for the greeting and read it aloud. His suspicion grows; he forbids her from a gathering where Kene might appear, and Alero lets her friendships fall away one by one. One evening she runs into Kene, who has heard the rumors Effa spread. She lashes out at him, then apologizes, and the double date he proposes with his girlfriend Soma feels like bitter medicine. Effa agrees to the meal, but sits through dinner reading every glance as a threat. When Alero’s enthusiasm for the couple’s romance spills out, Effa reads it as a verdict against him, and after the plates are cleared he rails against Kene’s intentions. In the argument that follows, he declares he is choosing himself, walks out, and returns only to accuse Alero of inviting Kene into the house. Then he lets the truth land like a stone: he slept with Soma, Kene’s own girlfriend. Alero denies nothing because she has done nothing, but Effa offers forgiveness for betrayals that never happened, and she walks out into the night. Nero, her closest friend, tells Alero what that pattern of mercy and accusation has meant all along: not love, but control. Effa returns wearing forgiveness like a crown, offering to pardon sins she never committed, and Alero finally says she is done being made small. She files for divorce. Within three months, she is sitting with Kene, remembering their old joke about blurred lines, and this time she says she is ready.
