After she leaks classified documents exposing that museum officials lied to a foreign government about the provenance of African artworks, foreign service officer Maya Spencer is demoted to a cultural department post in Nigeria. The transfer feels like exile, but a chance stop at an art exhibition brings her face-to-face with photographer Terry Okoye; they share an evening of easy conversation and undeniable chemistry, and a whirlwind romance quickly follows. That happiness collides with reality when Maya realizes Terry is applying for a UK Council artist grant, a program she helps review and approve, and her friend Joe insists she should end the affair before it becomes a professional scandal. She tries to listen, yet her feelings keep pulling her back to Terry. While Maya wrestles with that dilemma, her ex-boyfriend Antonio flies to Nigeria determined to rekindle what they once had, and Terry's bitter ex-girlfriend Crystal joins him in a scheme to collect damaging evidence against the new lovers. Their scheming gives Maya's colleague Aya, operating under secret instructions to find compromising material on Maya, all the leverage she needs; Aya confronts Maya with proof of the affair and presents three acceptable outcomes: Terry withdraws from the grant, Maya resigns from her job, or the couple separates and Terry automatically forfeits. The ultimatum pushes Maya and Terry into a heated argument about who should sacrifice more; when Maya asks Terry to drop his application, he refuses, seeing the grant as his one shot at recognition and accusing Maya of favoring her career over their love. Devastated but resolved, Maya decides her love for Terry matters more than job security and submits her resignation letter.
