Moffie is a raw, masterfully shot historical drama adapted from André Carl van der Merwe’s autobiographical novel. The film takes its title from a highly offensive Afrikaans homophobic slur, using it to confront the violent enforcement of toxic masculinity under the Christian nationalist apartheid state.

Storyline

Set in 1981 South Africa, Moffie tells the story of 19-year-old Nicholas van der Swart. Like all young white South African men during the apartheid regime, Nicholas is forced to fulfill two years of compulsory military service. He is sent to basic training and later to the perilous, war-torn border between Namibia and Angola to fight the "communist threat". However, Nicholas harbors a deeply dangerous secret in this ultra-macho, brutally homophobic environment: he is gay. When an unspoken connection develops between him and another recruit, Dylan Stassen, Nicholas must navigate a relentless landscape of psychological torment, physical exertion, and systemic violence to survive with his secret intact.
