Biography
EARLY LIFE
Kai Luke Brümmer was born on 17 February 1993 in Johannesburg to parents Jacques and Natalie Brümmer. He grew up in Henley on Klip. His mother, a drama teacher, introduced him to acting at a young age; she converted an old helicopter hangar into a community theatre and education space where he began performing as a child. He also took ballet lessons and trained as a circus acrobat. When his mother later attended film school, she often took him on set, sparking his passion for film around the age of ten. He attended St John’s College in Johannesburg, where he participated actively in performance. After high school he briefly worked as a ringmaster for the Boswell Wilkie Circus before enrolling at the University of Cape Town.
CAREER
Brümmer graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2016 with a BA Honours in Theatre and Performance (distinction in Acting). He quickly established himself on stage with roles in productions including Mephisto, Trophy, The Native, Immortal, Mike van Graan’s When Swallows Cry, Selwyn and Gabriel, the title role of Christopher Boone in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (winning a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Lead Performance in a Play), and Hally in Athol Fugard’s “Master Harold”…and the Boys. In 2024 he returned to the stage in a London production of Moffie at Riverside Studios. His international breakthrough came with the lead role of Nicholas van der Swart in Oliver Hermanus’s Moffie (2019), which premiered in competition at the 76th Venice Film Festival. The Guardian named him one of the best new up-and-comers at the festival, and critics praised his performance as mesmerizing and magnetic. Film credits also include Bring It On: Worldwide Cheersmack (2017), The Kissing Booth 2 (2020), Eraser: Reborn (2022), and Touchdown (2024). On television he has appeared in Origins: The Journey of Humankind, Deutschland 83, Vagrant Queen, the Viaplay series Professionals (as Danny Corbo, 2020–2022), Abraham Lincoln, the M-Net series Desert Rose (as Eben Greyling, 2022), and has a recurring role in the upcoming Amazon MGM series Bloodaxe.
PERSONAL LIFE
Brümmer has spoken thoughtfully about his South African heritage as a “Rainbow Nation” child born just before the first democratic elections, and about the complexities of portraying characters connected to the apartheid-era past.
Kai Luke Brümmer is regarded as one of South Africa’s notable rising actors of his generation, combining strong classical theatre training with critically acclaimed screen work. His portrayal in Moffie brought international attention to both his talent and to stories exploring identity, masculinity, and South Africa’s complex history. He continues to work across stage, film, and television in South Africa and internationally.
