In Insurance Company, Bernadine returns home to her husband Sam after a second master's degree. Sam throws a surprise welcome party, and Bernadine expects to resume their marriage. Sam keeps slipping away and complains of headaches, and after several days he admits erectile dysfunction. His doctors say the condition is temporary, but they cannot explain it. Bernadine pushes for medical and therapeutic help, so Sam walks out of therapy. Lady Lydia's spiritual oil and hired dancers only make things worse. Taye, a man from Bernadine's past, reappears and declares his love, and a single drunken night leaves Bernadine pregnant. Since Sam cannot perform, she hopes to pass the baby off as his, and her mother tells her to hide the truth and keep the child. Sam confesses to his therapist that his condition emerged while he was falling in love with his mistress Tessy, and the pressure of the affair is affecting him deeply. On their anniversary, Sam packs a suitcase and asks for a divorce, and Bernadine begs him to stay through the weekend. He reluctantly agrees. Tessy refuses to marry Sam and pleads with him to give his wife a month, and Bernadine's mother urges her to sign the papers. Bernadine collapses from an ectopic pregnancy and miscarries. Sam visits her in the hospital and learns she lost a child. When he asks, she admits the pregnancy came from a drunken encounter with Taye. Sam accuses her of passing off another man's baby, so Bernadine fires back that his affair and emotional distance pushed her away. Sam apologizes and says he fell out of love with Bernadine before Tessy, so he insists the divorce is for the best. He admits he did her wrong by sending her abroad. Two years later, Bernadine and Taye celebrate their first wedding anniversary at home with balloons, cupcakes, and a gift. Their twins are asleep upstairs, and the couple toasts to an enduring love.
