Storyline
The film opens in a modest household where Araola lives with her older sister, Carrie's biological mother, and the two teenagers Carrie and Akin. The sisters share a complicated bond because the older sister raised Araola and now Araola provides financially and her sister manages the home. Carrie prepares for her secondary school graduation and Akin, now eighteen, studies abroad. Their lives are marked by quiet sacrifices such as Carrie's torn school bag being mended by her aunt. Araola's ex-husband Daramoye reappears seeking a relationship with Akin only to be firmly rebuffed by Araola who insists their son is an adult who must choose contact himself. Meanwhile Carrie earns a forty percent scholarship to a UK university worth ten to twelve million naira but the family cannot afford the balance. After much deliberation they decide she will defer admission and pursue baking as a vocational skill. The older sister's visa application to attend Carrie's graduation is denied adding to the household's mounting frustrations. Conflict erupts when Carrie's biological mother discovers Araola has bought a car presumably for Carrie. She confronts Araola at the gate with her friend Gari demanding their golden girl and golden car. The scene turns chaotic as the mother accuses Araola of usurping her maternal role by throwing Carrie's graduation party and lavishing gifts. Carrie descends the stairs feeling mortified by her mother's public outburst. Later Carrie confronts her mother privately in a searing bedroom exchange. The mother insists on her biological primacy saying she gave birth to Carrie. Carrie counters that she was repeatedly shipped off to relatives like Mama Chinadu as Araola provided consistent love stability and education. The argument reveals deep fractures as the mother's obsession with material gestures clashes with Carrie's secret plan to buy her a house.
