Broken Shelter

In Broken Shelter, the film opens in a comfortable suburban home where Tara prepares for school amid gentle friction with her mother Linda and affectionate father Dennis. Car trouble with their driver Timothy forces Tara to accept a ride from a male classmate. Meanwhile Matilda arrives at the estate gate with Alice, a teenage girl whose mother Crystal has just died of cancer after the family could not afford treatment. Alice's father Mofe is abroad and unreachable, so Crystal's dying wish was for Alice to stay with her sister Linda. The security guard subjects the visitors to a humiliating barrage of insults before Linda finally receives them. Linda, who harbors deep resentment toward Crystal and their mother, greets the news of Alice's arrival with cold hostility, making it clear she views the girl as an unwanted burden. Alice moves into the household, where Linda assigns her menial chores, mocks her appearance, and repeatedly reminds her she is a charity case. Tara, initially warm, is manipulated by her mother's bitterness but gradually forms a genuine bond with Alice. At school, Alice befriends Wisdom, a kind classmate who helps her with studies and invites her to a group assignment at his house. Tara's jealousy flares when Wisdom shows Alice attention. At a party, a drink spills on Alice and Wisdom gives her his shirt, and the two share a tender moment. Tara, seething, later steals money from Linda's purse and plants it in Alice's bag to frame her for theft, and Linda expels Alice into the night. Wisdom finds her at the gate and brings her back. The truth surfaces when a house helper reveals Tara took the money to sabotage Alice's prom plans. In a raw confrontation, Linda admits she let old grudges poison her treatment of an orphaned child. Dennis, who has consistently advocated for Alice, reminds Linda of his earlier warnings. Alice's grandmother arrives, apologizing for years of estrangement and acknowledging Crystal's suffering.
