Toulou Kiki

EARLY LIFE

Toulou Kiki was born on 1 January 1983 in the Agadez region of Niger. She is of Tuareg ethnicity; both of her parents were Tuareg, and the family spoke Tamasheq at home. She grew up in a traditional Tuareg cultural environment in northern Niger.

CAREER

Kiki is primarily known as a singer of Tuareg music. She is a member of the group Kel Assouf and has contributed vocals to albums and projects involving Tuareg artists such as Tinariwen, Kel Assouf, Imarhan, and Bombino. Her recorded work with Kel Assouf includes albums such as Tin Hinane (2010) and Tikounen (2016). She made her acting debut in 2014 as Satima, the wife of a cattle herder, in Abderrahmane Sissako’s critically acclaimed film Timbuktu (also known as Le Chagrin des oiseaux). The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, received widespread international praise, and was selected as Mauritania’s entry for the Academy Awards. For her performance, Kiki was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the 11th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). Additional film credits include Hier (2018, as Sonia) and Midwives (Sages-femmes, 2023, as Mariam). She continues to work across music and occasional screen roles.

Toulou Kiki represents a bridge between traditional Tuareg musical culture and contemporary African cinema. Her breakthrough in Timbuktu brought international attention to both her performance and the broader visibility of Nigerien and Tuareg artists. She remains active primarily in music while occasionally appearing in film.
