Sindi Dlathu

EARLY LIFE

Sindi Dlathu was born in Meadowlands, Soweto, Gauteng. She showed early talent in performance, winning a national miming competition at age 11 and reaching the finals of the Shell Road to Fame talent competition around age 12. She received mentorship linked to the Mahotella Queens. At a young age she was cast as the understudy for the lead role in the stage production of Sarafina! under Mbongeni Ngema. She later appeared in the film version of Sarafina! (1992) alongside Whoopi Goldberg and worked as an assistant choreographer to Michael Peters. She also performed in Township Fever (touring the US around 1989–1990). After several years with Ngema’s company, she returned to complete her secondary education, finishing matric in 1996.

CAREER

Dlathu’s professional career began in theatre in the late 1980s. After Sarafina! and Township Fever, she returned to stage work in the mid-1990s, including the FNB Vita Award-winning production The Game (with Mary Twala, Abigail Kubeka, and Nomhle Nkonyeni) and other plays such as Cry, the Beloved Country, Married, The Suit (for which she won a Vita Award), and The Ritual. Her major television breakthrough came in 1997 when she was cast as Nomthandazo “Thandaza” Mokoena (later Buthelezi) in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango. She remained a central figure on the show from its inception until 2017—one of only a handful of original cast members to stay that long. She also played Nomfundo Molefe in the long-running SABC1 drama Soul City (multiple seasons, including 2001–2008). In 2017/2018 she left Muvhango to take the lead role of Lindiwe Dlamini-Dikana (later Dlamini-Zwane) in the 1Magic/Mzansi Magic telenovela The River. Her portrayal of the powerful, ruthless mining magnate became one of the most iconic and award-winning performances in recent South African television. She appeared in crossover episodes of The Queen and has continued working in high-profile projects including Queendom (as Tholakele Magagula / Mthombeni), Isiphetho – Destiny (as Zanemvula), Unseen, The Four of Us (as Busani Dhlomo), Umthetho, and others. She is also a singer (with backing-vocal credits for international artists in her earlier career) and has worked as a co-executive producer.

PERSONAL LIFE

Dlathu is known for fiercely protecting her privacy. She is married to Okielant Nkosi and is a mother. She has a twin sister, Zanele Sangweni. She rarely shares details or images of her husband or children publicly and focuses media attention on her professional work. She has organised fan events (referring to supporters as “Daughters of Sindi”) and given back through gestures such as donating matric dance dresses.

Dlathu is regarded as one of South Africa’s most respected and enduring television actresses, known for strong, complex female characters. She has conducted acting masterclasses and remains active across soapie, telenovela, and drama formats. She has faced occasional public speculation (including false claims about her health linked to a Soul City role) but consistently redirects focus to her craft.
