Molefi Monaisa

EARLY LIFE

Molefi Monaisa was born in Potchefstroom, North West Province, and grew up with two older sisters and a younger brother. He spent parts of his childhood and youth in Potchefstroom, Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Mahikeng. As a young man he was active in boxing, karate, and bodybuilding. He originally aspired to become a lawyer or doctor, but his family could not afford university fees. After high school he enrolled at the Method Actors’ Training Centre in Pretoria, where he earned a diploma in Dramatic Arts. This training launched his professional career in theatre and later television.

CAREER

Monaisa began in theatre in the mid-1990s. Early stage credits include works such as Goni, What the Bible Says, Julius Caesar (as Brutus), Madam & Eve, Welcome to Rocksburg, This Is for Keeps, The Black Hermit, Rivonia Trial, Madam President, and Athol Fugard’s Nongogo (2021 production in Durban). He has also worked as an acting coach and assistant director on stage projects. His television breakthrough came in 2006–2007 as Daniel Phute in the SABC3 comedy One Way. He followed this with the role of Amos Tshabalala (General Manager of Station Siyaya) in the SABC2 sitcom Konsternasie Oppie Stasie (2009). His most iconic role is Wallet (Ntate Wallet) on SABC1’s Skeem Saam, which he played from 2011 across multiple seasons (appearing in seasons 1–6, 8, 9, and 13). The character—a well-spoken, poetic, world-travelled former actor known for high-flown English and memorable quotes—became a fan favourite. His contract was not renewed for a later season, and he has spoken about missing the role. Other television credits include Ga Re Dumele, Hillside, Strike Back, Lockdown, Giyani – Land of Blood, Impilo: The Scam, Kokota, The Throne, Thola, The River, The Wife, Muvhango, Society, Umthetho (Netflix, 2026) He has also appeared in films, corporate videos, and commercials, and works as a voice-over artist. Languages listed in professional materials include Setswana, English, and Afrikaans.

PERSONAL LIFE

Monaisa is known for keeping a very private personal life. He has publicly stated that he is unmarried and has no children, preferring to focus on his acting and creative work. He is also a poet and is recognised for delivering witty, thought-provoking, and eloquently phrased lines (a trait that became a hallmark of his Skeem Saam character). He is not active on major public social media platforms and values privacy.

Monaisa is regarded as a versatile character actor with strong theatre roots and a gift for eloquent, poetic dialogue. After leaving Skeem Saam he continued working in both stage and screen projects, including the 2026 Netflix series Umthetho (a South African adaptation of the Brazilian series Brotherhood). He remains active in the industry as an actor and occasional acting coach.
