Odalys Garcia

EARLY LIFE

Odalys García was born on October 23, 1975, in Havana, Cuba. From a young age she showed talent in the performing arts. By age eight she was already taking part in dance demonstrations. At nine years old she was accepted into the prestigious Alicia Alonso School of Ballet in Havana, where she received formal classical ballet training. When she was 13, she moved with her family to Miami, Florida, in the United States. In Miami she quickly entered the world of modeling and began building a career in entertainment aimed at Hispanic audiences.

CAREER

Odalys began modeling after arriving in Miami as a teenager. In 1991 she was cast on the Univision variety show Noche de Gigantes (Night of the Giants) alongside the famous host Don Francisco (Mario Kreutzberger). Her presence and charisma helped her gain early recognition among Spanish-speaking viewers. She next hosted De Película, a Saturday afternoon movie program. Her biggest breakthrough came in 1993 when she joined the popular candid-camera / hidden-camera comedy series Lente Loco (Crazy Lens) as the character Pupu Pirú (sometimes listed simply as host). The show, often compared to a Spanish-language version of Candid Camera, ran successfully for years (into the early 2000s) and made her a household name in Hispanic television. She expanded into acting with a role as Reina in the Mexican telenovela Morelia (1995, produced by Televisa and aired on Univision), appearing in several episodes alongside actors such as Arturo Peniche and Alpha Acosta. She also worked as a disc jockey on a morning radio show at Florida station WQBA. As a model and personality she produced popular calendars (her 2001 edition alone sold around 200,000 copies) and accompanying videos. She served as a spokeswoman for Columbia House’s Club Música Latina and later became the national spokeswoman for Bally Total Fitness in the Latin market. In music she released her debut album Ven a Ver in 2002 (produced in association with A.B. Quintanilla) and a second album titled Odalys García in 2006. She performed at festivals in the United States and Latin America. In the late 2000s she focused more on acting training. After two years at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting in Los Angeles, she appeared in the feature film Ijé: The Journey (2010) as Carolina. She also performed in stage productions, including Rich Najera’s Latinologues T2U (2008). She has additional credits as an executive producer. By the early 2010s she largely withdrew from regular television work, citing a combination of factors including the limited commercial success of her music career and her desire to care for her father. She has made occasional later appearances (for example, a brief return on Despierta América and interviews) but has mostly stayed out of the mainstream spotlight while remaining remembered as one of the memorable faces of 1990s–early 2000s Univision programming.

PERSONAL LIFE

Odalys has generally kept her private life out of the spotlight. Around the early 2010s she stepped back from heavy public exposure. In interviews she explained that she focused on caring for her father, who was battling cancer and later passed away. She also moved to Los Angeles to study acting more seriously. She has lived in both Miami and Los Angeles at different times and is known to prefer a lower public profile in recent years. She is described as Catholic in some biographical references.
