Obed Baloyi

EARLY LIFE

Obed Baloyi was born in 1970 in Diepkloof, Gauteng. He grew up in a modest household and helped his mother sell fruit and vegetables on the streets of Soweto to support the family and fund his education. He also sold sweets at school. He attended Shingwezi High School in Malamulele (Limpopo), where he first participated in drama productions around 1987 while still a student. After school he joined the Melaisizwe theatre group and later trained at the Donaldson Orlando Cultural Club (DOCC) in Johannesburg under established actors such as Darlington Michaels. He is a native Xitsonga speaker and a member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC).

CAREER

Baloyi began acting in high school and formally entered the professional theatre scene in 1996 when he formed the Mangava Drama Group. As a playwright he wrote and staged Ga-Mchangani (presented at the Market Theatre Laboratory’s Community Festival and later the Zwakala Festival) and Via Soweto (premiered at the 1999 Barney Simon Young Directors and Playwrights Festival). He transitioned to television around 2000 with roles in Soul Buddyz (as Joe in season 2 and Prins in season 4). Early screen credits include Yizo Yizo 3 (as Zwepe), Scandal!, Heartlines, Nomzamo, A Place Called Home (as Blues), and Izoso Connexion. His breakthrough came in 2010 as TsuTsuma in the SABC2 sitcom Ga Re Dumele, a role he played across all six seasons (2010–2019). The performance earned him two SAFTA nominations for Best Actor in a TV Comedy, and he won the award in 2014. Other Television films include Giyani: Land of Blood, DiepCity, Isibaya, High Rollers, Shaka iLembe, Muvhango, Paradys, Umthetho (Netflix, 2026), House of Zwide (as Patrick), Triomf (2008, as Sonny), Jozi (2010), Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013), The Last Face (2016, as Atif), and Lobola Man (2024, as Uncle Long John).

PERSONAL LIFE

Baloyi is a private individual regarding his family. He has four children and has been married twice. He has spoken publicly about the close professional bond he shared with late co-star Lebohang Mpyana (Khelina on DiepCity), describing a strong on- and off-screen connection, while affirming his commitment to his real-life wife and family. He maintains a relatively low public profile on personal matters.

Baloyi is widely regarded as a versatile and understated performer who brings authenticity, linguistic richness, and depth to both comedic and dramatic roles. His journey from street vendor and school dramatist to SAFTA-winning actor is frequently cited as an inspirational story of perseverance. He continues to work steadily across television and film while remaining grounded in his theatre roots and cultural identity.
