Biography
EARLY LIFE
Nicolette Ndigwe is a Nigerian award-winning actress, screenwriter, producer, director, and humanitarian. She is the founder and CEO of HB&Q Impressions (Half a Buck & a Quarter Impressions) production company and is widely recognized as one of Africa’s rising young female filmmakers making international strides. Nicolette Ndigwe was born on 28 April 1992 in Enugu, eastern Nigeria, and hails from Awka, Anambra State. She was raised across four different states by her politician parents, an experience that gave her deep insight into Nigeria’s diverse socio-cultural dynamics. She began writing stories at age 8 (starting with 15-page short stories) and was already writing professional screenplays by age 16. She attended Federal Government Girls College, Onitsha (2004–2010), and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2011–2015).
PERSONAL LIFE
Nicolette is married to fellow actor and producer Ifeanyi Kalu. The couple has a young son. She founded the humanitarian organization MACMME, which uses storytelling to address societal issues such as maternal and child health. She is based in Lagos and maintains a relatively private personal life outside her work.
CAREER
Nicolette began her filmmaking journey at 16 with the 2011 blockbuster Damage, for which she received acting and screenwriting awards (including a Best of Nollywood Award; the film also won Best Film at the NAFCA Awards in Los Angeles). She was shortlisted by the British Council in 2015 (out of 266 entries) to represent Nigeria at the Edinburgh International Film Festival script lab for her screenplay The Counsellor. Her directorial debut was the advocacy short film Anave (2020), which she wrote, directed, produced, and acted in; it addressed maternal and child mortality due to malaria and was funded by Sterling Bank. In 2022, she produced and wrote her first feature film, Before Valentine’s, Nigeria’s first Valentine’s movie. It became the highest-grossing Nollywood film at the time of release, spent 43 days on Netflix’s Top 10, and was the second most-watched Nigerian film on Netflix in the first half of 2023. The film also won Best Film at the Gold Film Awards in Milan, Italy, and screened at international festivals including the Black Film Summit in Illinois, USA. She is currently producing the groundbreaking romantic dramedy On Different Grounds (written nearly 20 years ago and co-written with Writers Ink and Joy Oyediya), directed by Mildred Okwo. This is the first Nollywood-Bollywood cinematic fusion from a Nigerian producer and director, featuring a diverse international cast including Bollywood stars Vineet Raina and Nimesh Diliprai alongside Nollywood veterans such as Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Uche Jombo, Uche Montana, Jennifer Eliogu, Ebele Okaro, and others. Through HB&Q Impressions, she has a slate of four international films in development (some fully funded) scheduled for release between 2026 and 2027, including projects to be shot in Nigeria and the UK.
