Biography

EARLY LIFE

Nabil Ayouch was born on 1 April 1969 in Paris, France, to a Moroccan father, Noureddine Ayouch (a communication executive and founder of Zakoura, Morocco’s first microcredit association), and a French mother of Tunisian-Jewish descent. His brother is fellow filmmaker Hicham Ayouch. After his parents’ divorce, he spent much of his childhood in the Paris suburb of Sarcelles in a relatively modest environment, while visiting Casablanca during summers. He discovered international cinema at the local cultural center Forum des Cholettes, which inspired his interest in filmmaking. From 1987 to 1990 he studied theatre in Paris. He has spoken of navigating multiple cultural identities—French upbringing with Moroccan and Jewish-Tunisian roots—and of feeling like an outsider in both France and Morocco at times.

CAREER

Ayouch began his professional career as a scriptwriter and director at the advertising agency Euro-RSCG. In 1992 he directed his first short film, Les Pierres bleues du désert (The Blue Stones of the Desert), starring Jamel Debbouze. He settled in Casablanca in 1993 and directed further shorts that gained international recognition (Hertzienne Connexion and Vendeur de silence). In 1999 he founded Ali n’ Productions in Casablanca to support emerging Moroccan filmmakers and develop the local industry. Through initiatives such as the Prix Mohamed Reggab and the “Film Industry” project (2005–2010), he produced dozens of genre films and trained talent. He also launched Meda Films Development to support producers and writers from southern Mediterranean countries. Selected feature films as director: Mektoub (1997) – Morocco’s Oscar entry; box-office success addressing social taboos Ali Zaoua: Prince of the Streets (2000) – Ecumenical Award at Montreal; Morocco’s Oscar entry; landmark film about street children Une Minute de soleil en moins (2003) Whatever Lola Wants (2007/2008) – English-language film produced by Pathé Horses of God (Les Chevaux de Dieu, 2012) – Un Certain Regard at Cannes; based on the 2003 Casablanca bombings; Morocco’s Oscar submission Much Loved (2015) – Controversial film about sex workers in Marrakech (banned in Morocco) Razzia (2017) – Multi-threaded portrait of Moroccan society; co-written with Maryam Touzani (who also acted in it) Casablanca Beats (Haut et fort, 2021) – Cannes Competition; Morocco’s Oscar entry Everybody Loves Touda (2024) – Story of a traditional Moroccan singer seeking artistic freedom; Morocco’s Oscar submission He has also produced key works by Maryam Touzani (Adam, The Blue Caftan / Le Bleu du caftan, Calle Málaga) and other Moroccan films. His work frequently explores poverty, radicalization, gender, sexuality, identity, and social margins with realism and grit. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Académie des Césars, and the Arab Film Academy. In 2015 he was named Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters (France). He has served on major festival juries (including Berlin 2025). The Louvre Museum paid tribute to him with a carte blanche in 2014, and he has also exhibited photography exploring marginalized communities.

PERSONAL LIFE

Ayouch is married to Moroccan filmmaker, screenwriter, and actress Maryam Touzani. They met when she interviewed him as a journalist writing about Maghreb cinema; she later returned and the relationship developed. The couple collaborates frequently (he has produced and co-written several of her films) and lives and works in Casablanca. They have at least one son. He is actively involved in socio-cultural initiatives, notably through the Ali Zaoua Foundation, which he founded and presides over. The foundation has established cultural centers (starting with “Les Étoiles de Sidi Moumen” in 2014, followed by centers in Tangier, Agadir, Fez, and Marrakech) offering arts education to young people from underserved neighborhoods.

Nabil Ayouch is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary Moroccan and Franco-Moroccan cinema. Through both his own films and his production company and foundation, he has played a major role in developing Morocco’s film industry, training new talent, and bringing socially engaged Moroccan stories to international audiences. His cinema is known for its unflinching look at difficult social realities while remaining deeply humanistic.
