EARLY LIFE
Maria Dhiginina Kauna Nepembe was born on 4 October 1988 in Ondangwa, northern Namibia. She later moved to Windhoek during her childhood. She lost her father when she was eight years old and was raised by her mother, Helena, along with her stepfather Tommy and twin brothers Shekutamba and Uuwanga. As the eldest child, she took on responsibilities of guiding and disciplining her younger brothers. She attended Khomasdal Primary School and Dawid Bezuidenhoudt High School in Khomasdal, where she excelled and received awards for best English learner, choir, and soccer. She later studied Public Relations at the University of Namibia, completing a National Diploma and continuing toward a degree.
CAREER
Maria Nepembe is a multi-talented Namibian media personality who first gained widespread recognition as a housemate on Big Brother Africa: The Chase (Season 8) in 2013, representing Namibia. She spent 35 days in the house and finished in 20th place (out of 28). Before and after Big Brother, she built a successful career as a model, appearing on billboards, runways, and magazine covers (including Monochrome and Simply You). She worked with designers such as Chakkira Claasen, Amakeya, Mokeya, Modella, McBright Kavani, Kishwa, Nikola Conradie, and David Tlale. She competed in beauty pageants, placing as 1st runner-up at Miss University Africa 2011 (held in Nigeria) and reaching the top five finalists in Miss Namibia 2012. She began acting part-time around 2010, appearing as the leading lady in multiple music videos for artists including The Dogg (“Deception,” “Tromentos,” “Take You Home”) and PDK (“Dirty Kandeshi”). She has acted in Namibian films such as Why Should I Get Married and Fish Out of Water. She later expanded into directing, conceptualizing, styling, and directing music videos (notably “Hangover” by BlvcBoxx, which gained hundreds of thousands of views, as well as projects for Dillish Mathews and KP Illest). She has also directed short dramas and expressed a strong desire to elevate Namibian and African storytelling to platforms like Africa Magic, Netflix, and DStv. Maria has worked as a radio presenter (with her own show), television host (including GLAM TV), MC, and event host (she was the first model to host the Namibia Annual Music Awards). She launched a clothing line called RIA and has collaborated with major brands including Nivea, FNB, Nedbank Namibia, Gucci, Old Mutual, and InDrive. She is recognized as an award-winning media personality and creative entrepreneur who has worked across Namibia, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and even Milan.
PERSONAL LIFE
Maria Nepembe keeps much of her personal and romantic life private. She has spoken about valuing honesty, respect, kindness, and compassion. She has been involved in charity work, including clothing donations to the homeless, mentoring young girls with low self-esteem, and campaigns related to cancer awareness and women’s empowerment. She has described a friend battling cancer as a role model. In earlier years she was in a public relationship with a radio presenter named Walla, which ended after her Big Brother appearance. She continues to maintain a strong public presence focused on her creative work and personal brand.
Maria Nepembe is regarded as one of Namibia’s most influential figures in fashion, entertainment, and media. She has received recognition such as a Zikomo Lifetime Achievement Award and continues to advocate for the growth of the Namibian creative industries. She remains active on Instagram, where she has built a large following, sharing her work as a director, actor, and influencer. She is known for her versatility, ambition to put Namibia on the global entertainment map, and commitment to mentoring and charity.
