Joseph Wairimu

EARLY LIFE

Joseph Wairimu was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, specifically in the Mathare area and related informal settlements. He is the last-born of his late mother’s seven children. From a young age he used performance as a way to challenge negative stereotypes about youth from the slums. As a pre-teen he co-founded a street theatre group called Uprising Youth with friends. They dramatised stories about life in the slums, aiming to show that not all young people from such environments end up in crime or drugs. He was also involved in community initiatives, including Saturday morning clean-ups through MASA (Mathare Area Social Association or similar youth groups), where he served as chairman of the drama club and staged educational skits on topics such as HIV/AIDS.

CAREER

Wairimu’s early screen work includes the short film Kibera Kid (2006), which received international attention (including recognition related to the Berlinale). He also appeared in Ndoto Za Elibidi (Dreams of Elibidi, associated with S.A.F.E. Ghetto), which won awards at the Zanzibar International Film Festival. His major breakthrough came with the leading role of Mwas, an aspiring actor from rural Kenya who becomes entangled in Nairobi’s criminal underworld, in Tosh Gitonga’s Nairobi Half Life (2012). The film, co-produced with involvement from Tom Tykwer’s One Fine Day Films, brought him widespread acclaim. For the role he won: Best Actor at the Durban International Film Festival (2012) Best Actor at the Kalasha Awards (Kenya, 2012) Additional recognition at festivals in Nashville, Zanzibar, Nigeria, and elsewhere He followed this with the lead role of Jabali in Ni Sisi (It’s Us, 2013). Other notable credits include: Sense8 (Netflix series) – as Ken (water vendor, friend of Capheus) Kidnapped (2017) – as Wanga Supa Modo (2018) – as Rico Chaguo (2022) – as Pastor Appearances in Crime and Justice, Pepeta, and other Kenyan productions Beyond acting, Wairimu is an active screenwriter, director, and highly respected acting coach and trainer. He has worked with organisations such as S.A.F.E. (Sponsored Arts For Education), Anno’s Africa, One Fine Day Films, Kenya Actors Guild, FilmAid Kenya, and Daystar University. He teaches drama, acting for camera, puppetry, and fine arts, particularly in Kenyan slums and schools, and has served as a jury member at festivals (including Luxor African Film Festival). He has also taken on behind-the-camera roles such as assistant director and location manager.

PERSONAL LIFE

Wairimu keeps his private life largely out of the public eye. He has spoken candidly about the financial realities of acting in Kenya, noting that even after international success with Nairobi Half Life, he continued to face the same everyday struggles and supplemented his income through teaching and coaching.

Wairimu is regarded as one of the key talents to emerge from Kenya’s independent film scene in the 2010s. His work often draws from lived experience in Nairobi’s informal settlements while advocating for the transformative power of arts education and storytelling. He continues to balance screen acting with training the next generation of performers and community-based arts programmes.
