Emil Abossolo M’Bo

EARLY LIFE

Émil Abossolo-Mbo was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon. His father took him to the cinema when he was very young, an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for acting. He began performing imitations in his neighbourhood, later taking theatre classes and appearing on stage. In Cameroon he co-founded the comedy/theatre troupe XYZ with friends and built a local reputation before moving to France around 1984. He studied at the University Theatre of Yaoundé and later trained at the École Nationale d’Arts Dramatiques in Paris, graduating in 1986.

CAREER

Abossolo-Mbo began professionally in Cameroon before establishing himself in France. His stage work includes major classical and contemporary roles such as Hamlet, Titus Andronicus, and Aimé Césaire’s La Tragédie du Roi Christophe (under directors including Peter Brook and Jacques Nichet). On screen he has appeared in a wide range of French and international productions. Early credits include a small role in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan (1984) and a memorable turn as a passenger in the Paris segment of Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth (1991). He worked in American and European television series such as The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Highlander: The Series, and Queen of Swords. He is widely recognized in France for his long-running role as Damien Mara (father of Rudy Torres) in the popular soap opera Plus belle la vie (appearing in dozens of episodes from the mid-2000s onward). Other notable film roles include Maguette in Les Savates du bon Dieu (Workers for the Good Lord, 2000), appearances in Africa Paradis (2006), General Ajunwa in Hitman (2007), work in Newton Aduaka’s Ezra (which won the Étalon de Yennenga at FESPACO 2007), the district chief in Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s A Screaming Man (2010), and roles in OSS 117: From Africa with Love (2021) and later projects. He has also contributed voice work (including in animated films such as Kirikou and the Wild Beasts and Aya of Yop City).

PERSONAL LIFE

He has lived in France for several decades. He has a son named Akeva. In 2001 he suffered a serious illness that temporarily interrupted his career, but he recovered and returned to work. He is multilingual, speaking French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and his native Beti language. He has also been involved in singing and occasional literary or training activities.

Abossolo-Mbo is regarded as a versatile and experienced figure of the African diaspora in European cinema and theatre. He continues to work across stage and screen, occasionally directing or training actors, and has been recognized with awards such as Best International Actor at the Écrans Noirs festival. His career spans more than four decades and bridges Cameroonian, French, and international productions.
